Approximate Purchase Date: No hard date, but would like to get everything together in the next few weeks. I'm open to buying parts here and there, not all at once.

Budget Range: ~$800

System Usage from Most to Least Important: Moderate gaming though more is intended in the future, heavy web-browsing (on an average day I normally keep about 75 tabs up; I have a problem), some AI, PS, and occasionally Dreamweaver work for profession.

Parts Not Required: keyboard, mouse, monitor

Preferred Website(s) for Parts: I have a work colleague who has graciously offered to pick up parts for me from Micro Center and/or a TigerDirect outlet on his commute from Atlanta. If ordering online, probably newegg.com; I've heard some bad stories about ordering through TigerDirect.

Country of Origin: US

Parts Preferences: The only part I'm pretty dead set on is the Intel i5 2500k

Overclocking: Yes / Maybe

SLI or Crossfire: Yes / Maybe

Monitor Resolution: 1920x1080, 1920x1200

Additional Comments: I'm in no hurry to get this thing put together, so I'm open to waiting for deals if they are around the corner.

Well my current laptop is on its final leg and as I sometimes have to depend on my home-PC for my occupation, that puts me in a bad situation. I've been wanting to build a PC for awhile so I figured I'd pass on a pre-built and try my luck doing it myself. My goal is to build something that can handle most games, maybe not at max settings, but at least medium-high, a heavy load due to heavy web browsing, PS and AI work, and the occasional dabbling in Dreamweaver. I'm not actually looking to future-proof myself, but it would be nice if I could make this thing, or at least the majority of the parts, last a good 3-5 years. Here is what I've come up with so far:

CPU: Intel i5 2500k - I'm pretty set on this as I'm eventually looking to overclock, not necessarily at the get-go if I can't fit the additional parts required in my budget, but in the not-so-distant future.
http://www.microcenter.com/single_product_results.phtml?product_id=0354589 - $180.00
OR
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819115072 if my colleague is unable to purchase at Micro Center. - $220.00

MOBO: After lurking around the forums I've heard a lot of good things about the ASRock Extreme 3 and GIGABYTE GA-Z68A-D3H-B
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813157271 - $125.00
OR
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813128502&nm_mc=AFC-C8Junction&cm_mmc=AFC-C8Junction-_-RSSDailyDeals-_-na-_-na&AID=10521304&PID=4176827&SID=qc0scl0bdrty - $124.00

The Extreme 4 also looks interesting
http://www.microcenter.com/single_product_results.phtml?product_id=0367878 - $160.00

RAM: would love 8GB, but if it doesn't fit the budget, 4G is good for now; I can always upgrade later

Graphics: I'm open to suggestions but I've been looking at a GTX 550 Ti. The 560 Ti would be nice but that is a ~$70 price difference that may be better appropriated elsewhere. I'm considering SLI in the future but for now I'm going to stick with a single card.
EVGA http://www.microcenter.com/single_product_results.phtml?product_id=0360190 - $155.00
OR
MSI Cyclone http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814127573 - $145.00

HDD: SAMSUNG Spinpoint F3
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822152185 - $60.00

PSU: Open to suggestions. Something to power the above parts with some room leftover to perhaps power a second card in SLI if I ever go down that path.

Case: Open to suggestions, but to start the conversation
Antec Illusion http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811129066&cm_sp=Cat_Computer_Cases-_-Spotlight-_-11-129-066 - $65.00
OR
Antec Black Steel http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811129042 - $59.00

Optical: Cheap CD/DVD drive
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16827151233 - $20.00

Additional cooling: Heard good things about the 212+, but won't be purchasing if it doesn't fit within the budget. I will hold off on overclocking until I can get the needed cooling.

Total using all high-prices: $680 without RAM and PSU included. I figure ~$50 for RAM and ~$75 for a decent PSU and that puts me at $805. I still need to purchase a copy of Windows 7, which is out of scope for this budget, but something I'm keeping in the back of my head.

I'd rather not buy from TigerDirect online because of the horror stories I've read, but I found this barebones kit: http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/searchtools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=863122&csid=ITD&body=MAIN
It doesn't exactly contain the best parts, but it is a base to start from. Just something I was thinking about.

On a side note, I will be running dual-monitors: a 27" and 19" now, but hoping to trade the 19" for a 27" or 24" soon.

I'm very willing to shuffle things around so please offer your advice. Anything under $800 is good, anything close to $750 is even better so I don't take the hit of the OS cost so hard.

It looks like it'll do fine.

As for the GPU, either choice is fine. I think triple monitor even for production is a lot but it is fine. Up to you, both cards are superb. I'd recommend these two if you do pick between the 560 Ti and 6950 2GB. A request, if you can buy off amazon 😀 It supports me towards my website. All you need to do is buy off these links, Amazon sells and fufills it. I just get a portion of the profit.

Thanks for all of the feedback. A few questions about your suggestions:
- Will a 500W PSU be enough? I'm guessing I would need to upgrade it if I ever decide to run SLI?
- Is there really that much of a performance hike between the 550Ti and the 560Ti, or at least enough of one to justify the additional $70-80?
- I may get the hackintosh bug once I start messing with this computer because I work alongside guys who develop mockups and renderings in Omnigraffle, a Mac only program, and it would be nice to get be able to edit their work. 008Rohit, will the hardware you have listed support Mac OS?

And I'm kicking myself for not picking up the 300 Illusion while I was looking at it the other day on newegg; the coupon and discount expired yesterday... Live and learn I guess.

1. Well the 500w wouldn't be enough for SLI depending on the card but most likely not.
2. Yes there is.
5770 vs 560 Ti
http://www.anandtech.com/bench/Product/330?vs=296
The 550 Ti is equivalent to the 5770/6770 in most cases. So... That's the justification for that 5770 vs 560 ti.
http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/geforce-gtx-550-ti-gf116-radeon-hd-5770,2892-8.html
3. Check out my $850 build here. With your discount you get at microcenter. You're looking at $800, the ability to SLI in the future, and a pretty solid build all around.
http://www.squidoo.com/electronicandmore
Just get this Gigabyte board instead. Hackintosh's oddly work better with Gigabyte boards.
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813128502&Tpk=z68%20d3h

I won't be running SLI anytime soon so I guess I'll go with the 500w for now. And I think you've successfully peaked my interest in the 560 Ti. I wasn't really planning to create a build that would purely be used for gaming, but I have a feeling that once I start using it I'll get the bug, so the 560 Ti is probably the better bet.

As far as the mobo is concerned, are there any real benefits one of those boards has over the other (besides the Gigabyte playing nice with Mac OS)? After a quick look at their details on newegg it looks like they're pretty evenly matched, but I may have overlooked something.

I found these on newegg's daily deals:
ZOTAC GeForce GTX 560 (Fermi) - $169.99 after MIR
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814500206

http://www.newegg.com/Special/ShellShocker.aspx?cm_sp=ShellShocker-_-20-220-558-_-09022011_1

Are either of these worth the discount? I know the 560 is not a Ti, but is there that much of a performance difference between the Ti and non-Ti versions?

Thanks for the link, Des. It cleared up a lot of my questions.

So it looks like the build is going to be:
Processor: Intel Core i5 2500k $179.99
Mobo: Asrock Z68 Extreme3 Gen3 ATX $129.99
OR
GIGABYTE GA-Z68A-D3H-B3 (for hackintosh compatibility if I ever go that route) $128.99
RAM: Gskill RipjawsX 2x4GB 1.5V CAS9 1600Mhz $54.99

Tack on a copy of Win 7 and a new monitor and I'm looking at dishing out around $1225.00.
By the way, I'm looking at picking up either of these monitors if you guys care to weigh in:

I'm still debating whether gaining LED is worth giving up 3".

A few things:
1) Are there any other decent cases around the same $70 price range of the Antec Illusion? I would have jumped on the case back when it was $45 but it's since gone up.
2) Is the Patriot Gamer RAM I posted above worth the discount?
3) Do any of the GPU's listed above stand out from the others?

What is the deal with ARs, I mean I understand that it is money saved, but only if you get the money back. Now I know the MIR places you're going to be going with are quite reputable, but that doesn't mean that they will honor their rebates. Now, that doesn't mean they won't though, some companies do honor them but it takes them probably 2-3 months. Just a note on rebates.

@008Rohit - They are $70 now, $50 AR. Not $50 before rebates, before they were in stock and had the deal for $50 before rebates.

This is also an option.

2) Can you link the G series ram again? If it's not cheaper then no not worth it.
3) MSI 560 Ti TFII OC

Yeah, the monitors I listed aren't exactly the best buys but they do include HDTV tuners, which I like.

I was looking at the HAF 912 since you had listed it in you $850 build which is why I brought up Illusion alternatives. I definitely like the look of the Illusion better but I'll have to give those other ones you listed some more thought.

2) Patriot Gamer - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820220558
G.skills - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820231314

3) That's what I was thinking. I had it narrowed down between it and the EVGA Superclocked KR.

Yeah, I guess I'll grab the Patriot while it's on discount. I wasn't sure if Patriot was a discount brand since I see a lot of people going for Corsair or G.skills and very few running Patriot. That, and a lot of barebones kits I was originally looking at included Patriot, and those kits normally throw in cheap parts for the hardware they aren't focused on.

I'll have to look for some more benchmarks and see how the EVGA and MSI cards match up.

Well Patriot is a solid brand, no one really notices them because I guess the trend of G.Skill fans and the Corsair using its name. I have a Patriot G series kit (the AMD gamer series version) 4GB DDR3 1600 it performs just fine.

As for EVGA vs MSI, there won't be a lot of benchmarks for you to see. Especially since I have yet to see a review of the EVGA KR 560 Ti. I think the MSI would be better if you plan to overclock more later on. The KR is good as it is, but I don't think the cooler really is as good as the TFII

Well I procrastinated on the Patriot sticks and Antec PSU and now the sticks went back up in price and the PSU is out of stock.

For RAM, I'm now thinking

Thoughts of RAM or PSU?

Still debating on case and GPU. I'm leaning towards the MSI GTX 560Ti Twin Forzr II/OC but the amount of one-egg reviews on newegg has me a bit concerned.

If you want to save money the 1333 G.skill stick, if you don't mind the extra $5. Then thee Vengeance would be pretty good.

The PSU is solid but not if you don't plan to SLI. You should look to spend a little more for one that allows SLI since I see that your plan is a yes or maybe.
Some may disagree with this suggestion, but the OEM manufacturer (so who ACTUALLY makes the PSU) is Sirtec. In the past Rosewill has been using others and all of the Sirtec PSUs have shown they're not bad. So I have faith in this one.
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817182133
Or you can go Antec again, more money though.
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817371049

Thanks, I'm going to go with the Vengeance. And the Antec NEO 620w is back in stock at $49 AR; I think I'm going to go back to it. If 750w is what I need in order to SLI 560 TIs, then I'll have to see if I can swing the extra cash after I get everything else settled.

The only things left to decide are to make sure I want to go with the MSI 560 Ti Twin Frozr II/OC and the case. I'm still looking at the HD 6950 only because it would be nice to be able to run three monitors out of the gate without having to buy another card for SLI/Crossfire. I'm not looking to game on three monitors, just productive work. As for the case, I think I've narrowed it down to the
LIAN LI Lancool PC-K58W http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811112238,
Rosewill ARMOR Gaming ATX Mid Tower http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811147047,

BitFenix Shinobi Window ATX Mid Tower http://www.microcenter.com/single_product_results.phtml?product_id=0364190

The latter is a really nice looking case but I'm concerned about airflow as the front intakes are rather small.

The cases you chose all look nice, I do think ideally you'd want 750w for some headroom with overclocking.

Any of those choices for cases would be fine. The Shinobi case looks nice, I don't really see how the intake fans can intake air besides the bottom of the case.

The indentions that run from top to bottom on either side of the front and top fascias are actually vents. My concern was that they are rather small. There is also a fan, 120mm I believe, mounted at the bottom of the front fascia that will definitely assist in the airflow, but with the vents as small as they are, I don't know how much "cool" air it can pull in.

Any thoughts on the graphics card dilemma?

Well, I do see the vents it's kind of small though. But....

The reason I recommended the 1GB version, it is cheaper and you don't really need that extra gig of VRAM (TBH, no one really does. It's more of a mental thing than what it actually benefits)
