What's a good budget Xeon CPU to pair with a GTX 970 to avoid any bottleneck at 1080p ? Right now I have an old I5-750 oc to 3,7 ghz on a LGA 1156 motherboard. Is it worth it to buy a cheap Intel Xeon CPU ? Will I gain a few FPS ?

There is really nothing you can buy or use on that platform that is going to offer you any meaningful increase in performance. It is simply too far out of relevance to be useful anymore. Obviously, if your board supports it and you slap a used i7-860 in there you gain four simultaneous hyperthreads, which might help some small amount on games that are well optimized for multithreaded performance, but honestly anything invested into that platform, unless you can find a CPU for less than 20 bucks, is a waste of money that would be far better spent towards something that would help get you onto a newer platform.

For that platform, anything you throw at it is negative return on investments. Just to entertain your idea, might want to mention the make and model of your board to see if you're able to drop in any Xeon. Also post back with your motherboard's BIOS version.

Thank you for your help.

My motherboard is GA-H55M-UD2H (rev. 1.0) on the latest bios (F11)

I can get a Xeon X3470 for 16$ on AliExpress
https://www.aliexpress.com/item/329...hweb0_0,searchweb201602_10,searchweb201603_52

is it compatible ? I don't plan to upgrade in the next 2-3 years. For me if I gain 10 FPS I would be satisfy. I see contradictory information on this site.

"In terms of overall gaming performance, the Intel Xeon Processor X3470 is noticeably better than the Intel Core i5-750 2.66GHz when it comes to running the latest games. This also means it will be less likely to bottleneck more powerful GPUs, allowing them to achieve more of their gaming performance potential."

and

"Both CPUs exhibit very powerful performance, so it probably isn't worth upgrading from one to the other, as both are capable of running even the most demanding games at the highest settings"

Based on the CPU support list for that board, only the Xeon X3480 , X3450 and L3426 are compatible.

The Xeon X3480 might be a good choice if you can get it for a similar price as that X3470. You would gain about 500mhz on the boost frequency and you'd gain it's four hyperthreads in addition to the physical cores.

These are all the compatible CPUs for your motherboard.
