I have a 500 gig Buffalo HD-PNTU3 external drive that I use for archived data. At this point the drive is used to access older files, nothing new has been written to it for a while. It's roughly at 80% capacity.
Recently it's been harder to access the data in the drive. Under the suspicion that the USB port or electronics may be failing, I removed the drive from the external case an put it into a generic external case. However when I try to access the drive, I see an intial set of activity, then nothing.
Now, it could very well be that the drive, a Seagate Momentus 5400.6 mechanical drive, may have failed, but I find this a bit hard to believe because the drive is rarely used and just sits in storage for the most part.
So before I write this drive, and data on it, off, I started wondering if perhaps Buffalo may have added it's own firmware to drive so it only works with it's interfacing electronics. Is this a possibility? If so, is there a way to bypass this so I can access the data on the drive?
Thanks for any info on this.
