4870 would destroy the 9800

Way too much blah, blah, blah. We don't need to see all the descriptions.
They are worthless, and you should never, ever under any circumstances pay attention to it. What product description is going to be truthful and tell you something like:

The EVGA NVIDIA® GeForce® 9800 GTX 512MB graphics card lowers the performance bar by enabling half-throttle freeze frame game play at substandard resolutions while providing frame robbing power management with HybridPower™ technology. The PureVideo® HD engine delivers acceptable video and movie quality with average picture clarity featuring scene-optimized color and contrast enhancement, which does nothing really on todays LCD monitors. And when coupled with nForce® SLI®-ready motherboards, provides some performance boost in certain games when used in a 2x in a dual SLI configuration and horrible scaling performance for what it is going to cost you if you get suckered into 2.8x in 3-way SLI mode. That is a more realistic description. And that is why you come here to ask about hardware. Don't pay attention to the manufactures exaggerated descriptions. You will only end up spending a ton of money for meager performance if you do.

so right - especially as an inexperienced builder you're easy pickings for a retailer with a knack for good PR......Manufaturers are obviously going to talk up their product so you did the right thing coming here to seek objective, impartial advice (just watch out for those Nvidia fanboys).
Just come back with a budget, what you want your pc for and any personal preferences and we'll compile you build lists based on that info.
