Build a Home File Server

Hello All,

I have built a number of computers over the years, but now I am looking to build a simple home computer to store pictures, videos and music. I would appreciate your suggestions.

Some more information......

1. I already have a number of HDD's that I can utilize for this endeavour
2. I may be able to use an "older" motherboard and cpu
3. I will need a case
4. I will need a "server" OS ?
5. I will need a power supply
6. ?

I intend to basically put all my important files on these drives and utilize a RAID 3 or 5 configuration. This computer would simply be plugged into my router, and I would like to be able to send files to, and read files from this computer. I also would like to be able to use my xbox 360 (which it connected to the router as well) to access the music, video, and picture files to play them on my TV.

I guess I just need some basic input on what to do, or not do. What OS is the easiest and/or cheapest that will work with my other computers which are all win7?

Lian Li has a nice microatx case that has lots of storage space. LIAN LI PC-V354B $134.99

The case takes regular PSU's and you need to pick one that had enough outputs.
Something like Antec EarthWatts 380/430 ( $40-60 ) will probably do, but if you want to go for the best
Seasonic X series is hard to beat, the 560W is a bit overkill even, but it would do.
They also have a fanless 400 and 450 models.

For server OS unless you want to do some linux magic, windows home server works pretty good, i think it costs like $50-60.
It does have some limitations to it so check before buying.

You would probably be best off getting a good H61 microatx board ( $60-80 ) with enough connectivity for your hard drives.
The built in graphics make for easy installation and there is a bunch of dual core CPU's available which will run things fine.
Pentium G620 dual core 1155 socket CPU ( $80 ). You might need to get some extra Sata cables though so make note of that.

Then add a 2x2GB kit of 1.5V CAS9 1333Mhz ram ~$25

The new components generate less heat and as such work better in the small case.

A DVD drive might also be handy for OS installation, otherwise it's not really needed. At $20 it is not a big issue either way.
