Hi all! I am new to PC building. I have an ancient 14 year old pre-built (yes, really, an Alienware Aurora R1) that has limped along with maintenance upgrades for years, the latest being an RTX 3070ti. This is a good enough card for me, but now I'm getting problems with the drivers saying there aren't compatible with my CPU and games start but quickly crash with a hard freeze. I think this beast finally has to be put to the pasture.

So seeing as the GPU is the priciest bit I was thinking of snagging some cyber monday deals to rebuild everything else! I just want to play multiplayer games with my son on High-ish settings at 2k, maybe with the possibility of 4k in the future.

I found this: https://www.tomshardware.com/deals/4k-raming-rig-black-friday

I could grab these parts, except the GPU, and maybe upgrade that later. Thoughts?! Thank you!!

Edit: forgot to say my budget is $500-800, ideally, but flexible if that's a mistake somehow. I am new to this. Not planning to overlock. I expect to upgrade the GPU every few years, but would like the CPU etc to last me. 14 years was a damn good run.

------

Approximate Purchase Date: Today, if possible!

Budget Range: 500-800

System Usage from Most to Least Important: Gaming, internet

Are you buying a monitor: No

Parts to Upgrade: Everything for the rig except existing GPU (RTX 3070ti). Motherboard, CPU, RAM, boot drive, PSU, case, cooler.

Do you need to buy OS: Yes
Please note that if you're using an OEM license of Windows, you will need a new one when buying a new motherboard.

Preferred Website(s) for Parts:
Newegg or Amazon but open to others

Location: Washington DC

Parts Preferences: Intel/Nvidia has worked well for me, but don't care as long as it works!

Overclocking: No

SLI or Crossfire: No

Your Monitor Resolution: 1440p

Additional Comments: I want the motherboard/CPU to last me, and have room for future incremental upgrades.

And Most Importantly, Why Are You Upgrading: Basically, old ass CPU doesn't seem to be compatible with modern games. Games are crashing.

The link you've passed has a horrible PSU, unless you want to ruin all the parts/money you've spent on them. Case in point, you don't invest ~$60 on a PSU for a platform that has a ~$700 GPU in it. WD SSD's are also on my don't buy list after the people at Microsoft decided to botch their update package.

You're advised to stylize your thread with info asked for in this thread;
and the community can move forward with suggestions.

IMHO, if you're buying something at the end of 2024, you should invest in AM5. That's the path forward, while DDR4 is merely hanging on due to Intel's 12th Gen and AMD's AM4 platforms.

Something like the build below would work, a 7600X should keep you gaming for a while, but you could look at upgrading to an 8 core if you want to spend the funds and if you think that will suit your needs better.
