Build advice

(Seperately posted to agd)

Finally got around to seriously playing some D2 last night after playing
around with a couple of characters off and on, and thought that I would ask
in here for some advice.

I am starting out with a barbarian, because it looks like, to my
inexperienced eye at least, that it offers the opportunity for going
through the game without managing toggles or anything like that. Only
walking and killing.

Here is the style that I am looking to play: The closest thing I could
cpompare it to is a "tank" from a MMORPG. Walks in, hits things and they
die.

I am up to L8 so far, and have been splitting my skill points between Bash
and Weapon Mastery (axe). I am debating getting the double weapon skill,
but am currently leaning away from that. From looking at the info that the
Skills screen gives me, I can see that there is a nice link (synergy is the
term I think) between Bash and Stun, so once I get to the right level, I
will be putting points in there. IIRC, Stun also gets duration from one of
the war cries. Is it worth putting more than one or two points in the war
cryto increase the duration of the stun?? What would be a useful length of
time for a stun??

Where should I be putting the 5 stat points I get every level?? I have been
focussing on Strength and Vitality, and every other level putting a couple
points into either Dexterity or Energy.

For those of you that have barbarians, and use a build something like this,
is Bash your only attack, and you use that every time, or do you use the
normal attack and save bash for nasty enemies?

Finally, and this is a stupid question, how do you set a hotkey? I have
looked, but I don't know if it is something that I missed, or if was just
brain-dead the day that I looked.

PS: Is there any etiquette for making agd (or agd2) games on the server? I
was the one that made themlast night between 8ish and 10ish (EST).

That's almost true, but when you hit act4 chaos sanctuary and act 5 world
stone level 3 and throne room you will at some point kill yourself with
that playing style due to Mages cursing you with the Iron Maiden spell
which return minimum 200 percent damage to you.
One of the safest build would be a summoning necromancer.

I have never build a barbarian using bash or stun as main skills. But
usually when i build a barbarian i try to max out the mastery for the kind
of weapon i choose to use. And i also put points in some of the warcries,
Battle Order raises you life and mana, Shout raises your defense, both
very usefull, and if you play in parties they would indeed like it.
I also put at least 1 point in Battle Cry, it lowers monsters defense
rating and their damage.

Basic is as a barbarian is you don't need points in Energy, you use points
in strength so you can carry your armor and weapon, if you use a shield
you should try to put enough points in Dexterity to keep a 75% blocking
rate, else just enough to keep a good chance to hit enemies, everything
else goes to Vitality.

I always use my main skill on every attack, and then i keep a backup skill
for monsters that are immune to my main skill.

Press 'S' for showing you skills, move the mouse pointer over the skill
you want to hotkey and press the key. Go to options to assign keys for
hotkeys, default is F1-F8, but you can have 16 hotkeys in total iirc.

Can't tell as it seems you are en a US server and i play on Europe.

Hope this helps you a little.

How do you get 16 hotkeys? I know about the F1-8, but how do you double
that?

TIA

Those 1st 8 are default, if you go to the options / configuration screen you
can assign the rest to whatever.

A single point in Berserk eliminates that risk.

That is correct, but i will not feel like tanking using berserk with 0
defense. Tried it and ripped, that not what i recommend to a new player.
