Build for son questions . . .

Currently, my son has an FX 6300 and a 750ti running on 8gb of ram (our first ever build).

Needless to say, the motherboard crapped out (just under warranty still and we have a new one on the way). But, I think it is time to upgrade him for Christmas. Being that upgrading at this point involves upgrading most parts, I have decided to get him something beefier for Christmas. I have read and read on "budget" systems until my eyes are bloodshot. The main question I have going forward is the CPU (I think I have settled on an RX580 as bang for the buck goes).

He will use it for school as well, but nothing major. Here are some choices I have narrowed it down to (I think).

Ryzen 7 1700x ($150)
Ryzen 5 1600x ($150 but doesn't seem to make sense with the above on sale)
Ryzen 5 2600x ($208)
Intel i3 8100 ($115)
Intel i5 8400 ($180)

I was leaning toward the 1700x at $150, but I am far from familiar with all the intricacies and specs outside of the basic speed.

Any input or direction would be greatly appreciated. We built his first one together and it was a pretty cool experience I am hoping to expand on this year. He plays Warframe a bit, Destiny 2, and Dark Souls 3 (from what I remember seeing him play . . . it is a surprise so can't come out and ask without raising suspicions).

Also, I am not set on the RX580, but it seems like a decent value in the $200 range and figured that would get him some time before having to focus on upgrading.

Thanks in advance for your help, most of the little I do know came from posts here!

Edit: I am going to move his old one into the living room to run some media off of.

A 2600 outperforms a 1700x. The IPC is better on the 2nd gen Ryzen.

I'd try to get this case if you can. It will need 2 exhaust fans to go with the 2 intake

That seems to be about the range we will end up at. Tad higher than I hoped, but it is worth it if it will last him about 4 years or so.

Edit: I meant until he is out of high school which is about 2 1/2 years . . . and makes me feel older than I did 30 mins ago.

My suggestion would be to go with a 3000mhz 2 x 8 kit of memory and cut the SSD down the a 512gb so you can squeeze a gtx 1070 into the budget. That will make all the difference in longevity and performance of the build.

That power supply is a great price and especially the gtx 1070. I've never seen one below $400. I'd snag that one while you still can. When the 1000 series dries up you'll be left with the 2000 series inflated pricing and/or eBay.
