I’d like to use my old gpu, psu, ram, memory and windows. Need recommendations for cpu and motherboard replacement.

Old build
Cpu
:Intel Core i7 6Gb/s USB 3.1 ATX Motherboards - MSI PRO Z270-A PRO LGA 1151
Gpu: GIGABYTE GeForce GTX 1080 G1
Ram:CORSAIR Vengeance LPX 16GB (2 x 8GB) DDR4 3000 (PC4 24000
Storage: ssd Samsung 250gb(might upgrade to 2 tb
Psu: rm850x
OS: windows 10

New build
Cpu
: Intel Core i3-12100F 3.3 GHz Quad-Core Processor
Motherboard: Gigabyte B660M DS3H AX DDR4 Micro ATX LGA1700 Motherboard
Gpu, Ram, Storage, Psu, OS: same

Someone said I could build an i3 and it would run circles around my old build so I have this setup on pc builder chosen let me know if I can improve on this. Looking to keep it near the same budget. If any compatibilities occurs let me know as I’m a noob.

Your plan is good.
I would not be penny wise and pound foolish by buying the F suffix processor to save some $25.
If you ever have a graphics issue, integrated graphics will keep you going.

We all have a budget, and a i3-12100 is a reasonable processor.
Here is a review:

That said, if your budget permits, see if you can't go stronger.
Perhaps to 13400.

Thanks!!!

I’ll get the 13400 then. this comp actually crapped on me(dead mb) and the motherboard I have listed there is replaced(same brand) but now im getting no output to display. Even with vga. I managed to get an image once but the pin on the cooler fan broke so I replaced that and now no image again so basically thinking I should spend as little as possible or just build an entire new pc.

same as 12400, but more pricey.

Not exactly the same.
I5-12400 has 12 processing threads and a total passmark rating of 19538. Single thread rating is 3531. Not bad.
I5-13400 has 16 processing threads with a rating of 26206 and a single thread rating of 3836.
It is the single thread performance that games need most.
You get what you pay for. There is a continuous spectrum of price/performance.
FWIW:
I5-13500 20 32474/3957
I5-13600K 20 38442/4187
