Sorry if I'm kicking a dead horse...

Get a NForce4 mobo; mine is an Abit KN8 Ultra and I'm happy with it. Get a decent single-core socket 939 CPU, like a 4200+. Add a top of the line GPU, like a 7900zzzz or 1800qqqq. A single 250GB SATA drive will give you all the speed you really need there. Buy a nice 19" LCD. Pick out a case that will take 120mm fans front and rear, and maybe a side fan. Keep it quiet by adding variable-speed fans with thermal sensors and/or manual control. Throw in a DVD-ROM, and a nice rodent like a Logitech G5. Finally, a 500-600W PSU should be sufficient.
Take the $2500+ you have left and invest it. It will be there when total-immersion VR helmets and/or other new high-end gaming gear comes out. You'll be buying while others are drooling.

If you will do other than gaming [too] on it, then go for a dual-core CPU, add at least one more hard drive for backup, and make the DVD a writer.

Someone else might have a bigger epenis today, but you'll have the bigger bank account tomorrow, and won't drown in your own drool when the latest game requires a 99000 GPU.

-OR-

Build two or three of them, and invite a friend or two over for live as well as online gaming.

Thats like me saying "Hey I want to buy a holodeck in 2060 and want to plan how much to save."

Actually, hehe, I already am building one in my garage. It looks pretty cool. Comes complete with hot chicks in leather and everything.

😀

Not really, but you can always dream!
