In fact the gygabyte GA-970-UD3P has as many voltage regulation modules as many 990FX chip motherboard. So as overclocking is concerned, a 990FX chip board is expensive for almost no gain for a 6-core CPU.

Also, a FX-6350 has better single core performance than a FX-8320. Think of it as a 8350 but with 6 instead of 8 cores. So for gaming, the FX-6350 is actually better since games does not use more than 4 thread.

MB - The 970 is a capable overclocker. No doubt about it... The 990 will give better results though.

CPU - I just assume that everyone with an FX build is going to overclock so really this is a comparison between processing threads (six or eight). The 6300, 6350, 8320 and 8350 all running at 4.5GHz for example...

If the FX build isn't going to be overclocked, then an Intel build would be a better spend of the money on the H97 platform. An i5 and H97 board is easily in the price range and would outperform an AMD setup at stock speeds.

And not every 990 chip will perform better. you can't assume this.
