Hi, looking into building a PC for the first time, but am really worried about buying incompatible components, or just 'getting it wrong' in general. :(

So far I know the ideal PC I'm looking for is a gaming PC with:
  • Mid-tower case
  • PGA ATX motherboard (Only want 1 graphics card, no SLI needed)
  • 6GB ram minimum (Overwatch recommended ram)
  • 1 GeForce GTX Graphics Card (Only really had experience with GeForce, any other reccs?)
  • AMD Ryzen CPU (How many cores/GHz are necessary?)
  • Stock Cooler (Water cooling doesn't sound like a good idea for beginner)
  • Semi-Modular PSU (Heard semi-modular would be best, thoughts? What wattage?)
  • 512GB SSD (Is this enough? Maybe 1TB?)
My monitor is 144hz refresh rate for reference as-well.

Ideally I'd love to run games like Overwatch with ease and good case temperatures. With this in mind, what components/build would you recommend, and any general do's and don'ts for beginners?

Thanks for your patience and any help you can give :D

Edit: I'm from the UK, budget is at most £500 - £800, if it needs to be higher in order to play a game like overwatch smoothly then I'll look into it, and already have monitor, mouse, keyboard, speakers + headphones.

What country are you shopping in?
Whats your budget?

Do you need monitor, mouse, KB, speakers/headphones within your budget also?
In the UK and at max, I'm willing to go £500 - £800 budget-wise, but if what I'm looking for ends up being lower than that then all the better. As long as it'll play a game like Overwatch smoothly, I'm happy haha :geek:

And yeah I have a monitor, keyboard, mouse, speakers + headphones so they won't be included in the budget

Thank you for taking the time to do this, really appreciate it! Helped me realise M.2 form factor for SSD seems to be the better choice, and a microITX motherboard and case actually makes sense considering I'm not planning on adding any extra bells and whistles. (y)

I didn't open all your links to add up your price total, but I'd wager your list sits on the low end of your given budget range. That's why I threw out something toward the higher end to compare.

I would say your biggest...."misstep" was your choice of DDR4-2133 RAM. The price/performance sweet spot these days is DDR4-3200. In fact, that same Corsair Vengeance kit you picked is available for the same price in DDR4-3200.

yeah it ended up around the £720 mark, but I probably chose some components that aren't as good as they could be like the RAM for example, so your price makes sense.
thanks again!

coming back to say, managed to build my first PC successfully w/ the recommendations. OW actually loads instantly now :ouch:
if anyone happens to come across this thread, a discord server called 'buildapc' really helped for things like questions, problems, concerns, recommendations etc (y)
