Build Upgrade Advices

Hi everyone,

I'm currently with a Asus P8H61 with a i7 2600k and 8 gb ram and even if it runs pretty good,i also have a gtx 970 (but runs on a pci 2.0) and a ocz 600w + ssd and hd storage... i wanna upgrade a bit ! I could buy some other ram but i have only 2 slot and i have already 2*4 gb ram and to upgrade to a descent 16 Gb ram i need at least 100+ € and another motherboard to get a pci 3.0 for my gtx 970 but well it's spending money to an obsolete and overpriced market right now since the 1155 socket isn't selling anymore.

Like you see, i'm kinda want to build a good pc and keep it as long as i can.

I play a lot, and i want a workstation too since i m a trainee in network computing and i work with virtual machine a lot !

I dont have a lot of money right now so i m gonna leave the gpu for later.

I'm still deciding between those for motherboard : ASUS ROG Strix Z370-E Gaming Gigabyte Z370 Aorus Gaming 7 MSI Z370 Gaming Pro Carbon ASRock Z370 TAICHI

I really don't care about esthetic, i want a good motherboard where i will be able to overclock a bit easily, got good connectors, some m.2 for later

And for the cpu maybe the 8600k who is 100 € cheaper than the 8700 k but well i m ready to get the 8700k anyway !

Any though on this to help me ? Thx a lot in advance !

Ypu have a fairly strong pc still now imo unless thetes a performance deficit youre not happy with ??

Pci 2 x 16 does not hold back performance of any current gpu to any noticeable extent.

The sole issue you have is ram upgrading on a 2 slot board & I understand the reluctance to sink money into a 5 year old platform.

Ill be honest , I think the new k series chips are overpriced , once you add a cooler (& it has to be a good one) the price is way way over the top.

For me the choices would be a locked i7 8700 or a ryzen 1600 depending on budget.

The ryzen is overclockable , the locked i7 isnt but its stock performance is so strong it just doesnt need to be overclocked at all.

Do not bump your posts.

The motherboards you have displayed are all pretty good. You cannot go wrong with any. If you want better performance, go with the 8700k. Otherwise, the 8600k is still a good choice. For workstation works, consider the Ryzen line up as well.

As for RAM, I would go with the Corsair Option as it is simply aesthetically pleasing. Go for whichever is cheaper.

Before anything, switch out that PSU before upgrading. Go for a good quality one; that is not that great. A top tier unit from Seasonic, EVGA or Corsair should be good enough.
