Hi there!

After quite a lot of reading, I'm thinking about putting these parts together for a decent gaming computer. Just wanna make sure I am not doing anything freakingly wrong - like buying a RAM that my motherboard wouldn't support. So, there it is:

Motherboard: MSI Z87 MPOWER LGA 1150 Intel Z87 HDMI SATA 6Gb/s
CPU: Intel Core i5-3550 Ivy Bridge 3.3GHz (3.7GHz Turbo) LGA 1155 77W Quad-Core
Video card: ASUS GTX650TIB-DC2OC-2GD5 GeForce GTX 650 Ti BOOST 2GB 192-bit GDDR5 PCI Express 3.0 HDCP
RAM Mem: CORSAIR Vengeance 8GB (2 x 4GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800)
HDD: Western Digital WD VelociRaptor WD6000HLHX 600GB 10000 RPM 32MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5"

These parts come to somewhere around $780 to $900 in different online sellers, which seems pretty decent to me for a reliable good gaming pc.

I'd love to hear your input, guys. Thanks a lot.

Solution
The first problem is that a socket 1155 CPU( your i5) won't work on an Z87 (socket 1150) Motherboard. Also, you could easily safe some bucks by going with another motherboard, especially since you can't overclock a non K proccesor. with that said, you may want a cheaper HDD with more storage and spend that on a better GPU!
Cheers

Hey there!
For that budget of about $800 you can build a gaming pc waaaaaaaayyyyyyyyyyyyyyy better than the one you listed since:
The gpu is very weak and not good for gaming
Expensive z77 mobo when the cpu cant overclock
Last genh cpu
Expensive hdd
no power supply or case?
Are you in america or the uk? If so then i can put a list together for you when im on my comp not on my puny laptop which lags alot 😛
Just ask me if you would like a full list, i will as soon as i can!

Yeah, I'd love that - the list, I mean.

I live in Brazil, actually, and will have a friend/relative bring things from either the states or from Canada. Case + power supply, because they are bulky, I`ll get them here and get a technician to put everything together.

Thanks a lot for the help.

EDIT: btw I'm not a huge fan of overclocking, would MUCH rather not have to meddle with that. I know 99% of people have done that with no harm done, but my own experience (even with expert people counseling me) is horrible in that department.

$850 and ALOT better than the original build :)
Just ask if you want anything changed!

Thanks for the work!

But as I mentioned, I cannot buy big parts such as power sources or cases abroad (I live in Brazil), because there is no way I can get them here.

And a question about your picks:

1) Is Seagate Barracuda 1TB 3.5" 7200RPM Internal Hard Drive as fast for reading (or close to) as what I had picked? In my personal experience, I've found that game loading times can be severely bottle-necked by slow hd reading times.

2) The CPU I had picked is 3.3GHz and yours is 3.1GHz. Isn't that kind of important? (no sarcasm intended, real doubt)

3) The video card you're suggesting is about twice the price compared to my own pick. Is it really worth to pay that much more and than save that much money on the other components? What about the GeForce GTX760, it looks about twice as efficient as my first pick, and is about $80 more expensive, as opposed to the GTX 770, which is about $150 more expensive... would that be a good compromise?

4) Related to the question above, the motherboard you suggested is about $100 cheaper than my pick. Why can I afford to pick something so much cheaper (again, honest question, would love to understand why)? I always thought having a solid, top of the line motherboard was the most important thing because it means I can keep updating my computer that much longer.

Again, thanks a lot for all the patience.

First why have you selected a best answer when (judging by your questions) your problem is not solved?

1) The HDD is a bit slower not that much and alot quieter, the velociraptor is fast but not worth so much more money and its LOUD.
2) The extra .2GHZ wont affect it and since the cpu i chose is Haswell it is
a. More upgrade able since the socket (mobo type) is not dead and is still used
b. About %5-%10 faster than ivy-bridge
3) You suggested the 650ti boost which is a lower end card, the gpu is the MOST important for gaming and where you should spend most of your money.
The 770 is as powerful as the 680 and that used to be like the best.

4) Well the mobo is important but since you are
a. Not overclocking since you cant with the cpu
b. The gpu is the most important
The mobo is important to get a good one but there is not point spending so much on one that you will not use the full potential of and the one i chose is still a good motherboard

You can buy the case and the power supply in Brazil might cost more but do what you need to.

If you make the changes i suggest you pc will go from
1080p Some games maxed 40fps ---> ALL games maxed 60+fps 😉

Just ask me if you have any more doubts!
