Building a mining rig. Question regarding the PSU and the GPU extenders.

Hello,
I am planning to run below configuration:

Corsair Enthusiast Series RM1000x Power Supply, Fully Modular 80 Plus Gold 1000 Watt, EU Version (10 years warranty)
SKU: CP-9020094-EU
Pentium G4620 1151/3.70GHz/3MB
Gigabyte Z270 Gaming K3
DDR4 4GB RAM
6 x Palit GeForce GTX1070 SuperJet 8GB

Will this PSU be enough for the system? Also, I will need to purchase GPU extenders, can you tell me which type should I use, only with the usb or usb + 6 pin in order to give adequate power to all 6 video cards?

I wouldn't try 6 with that PSU. While the gaming load on a 1070 is around 150W, the work load is higher.

I wish I had a better load chart for the 1070. This is the total system draw, and I'm sure it's measured at the wall so PSU effiicency needs to be calculated as well. But if you subtract the 74W idle draw from the total load of Furmark you get a max draw of around 200W. 6 of these cards will draw around 1.2kW just themselves. If you are getting 6 of these into your system you are going to need a 1.5kW+ PSU.

As mentioned above this is probably not a good idea. Each of these cards is $400+, so six will be ~$2500. The system all together will cost more than $3k. In the recent Toms article the author writes he made around $50 a month, and it would take 60mo, or 5yrs, to pay that off. In that time the ability to make $50 a month will have evaporated.

Mining Ethereum is still a worthwhile activity, provided the price of Ethereum stays around or above $200, but only if you live in a region with low utility fees. At the current difficulty rating, 97MH/s can mine a little less than 0.9 Ether coins in 30 days. As long as Ether’s market value remains higher than $40 per coin and the difficulty doesn't spike, I break even or make money. With a 10 cents/kWh utility rate, Ether must trade for at least $60 to break even. In San Francisco, where electricity costs can reach 25 cents/kWh, you would be losing money by running the system if the price of Ether dropped below $165.

You should not expect the same returns every month, though. As the mining difficulty rises, the number of coin shares you receive each round drops. If the price of Ethereum doesn't go up with the difficulty scaling, it affects your income.

Mine if you already have a system, but I wouldn't drop $3k on a system now and hope for the best.

@4745454b, regarding the PSU I changed my mind and ordered Corsair HX1200i.
Now regarding your thoughts on the mining overall. I have made my calculations and thoughts already. And I am going for it, long term. I am completely aware of the etherium current situation and risks. I can only tell you that whenever I decide, I will switch to mining other cryptocurrencies.

So, what about my GPU risers/extenders question, can anyone please help me?

You still won't have the power to run 6 cards. You'll need that entire PSU just for the cards, and it will be running at 100%. Not a good idea. Again, you really need at least a 1.5kW PSU to make this work, larger isn't a bad idea.

So, I will have around 1120 watt power consumption. I also saw other mining colleagues with such setups.
What do you think I am doing wrong in the calculations?

I looked at the Toms article, but they only show a load on the GPU for gaming, not calculating. That's different. Even your first link shows a draw of 170W. 170W * 6 = 1020W. Add 100W more for a low end CPU and rest of the system and you are at 1120 at least. You don't want to load a PSU that close to 100% long term.

I mention gaming load because that's lower than what doing calculations like you are planning is. Making 6 GPUs work at a 100% load is going to be higher then just them gaming because gaming doesn't peg the GPU to 100%. And as I showed above, having six of them with a system is going to be way to close to 100% of the PSU output. I also meant double check your cost/profit projections. You came to a VERY different conclusion then our staff writer did.

So yes even if it is max draw you still need a good 1200W PSU because under continuous load you will still need a good headroom for marginal spikes and be on safe side.

Did you even look at the math I provided above? What is 170W * 6? Now add a CPU, and the rest of the system. Is an extra 100W moving from a 1200 to a 1300W PSU really going to matter much? When planning a system like this you need to plan for worst case. Worst case is not a 170W draw you see while gaming, but 200W for computing, and a buffer to not max out a PSU. The difference is ~200W (30W per card.) but it will matter over the life of the unit.

You've been avoiding moving up to a 1.5kW PSU, I still haven't see any math from you about how you are going to get your money back. It's obvious to me you just want to do this, I hope you enjoy losing your money while you heat your house. Good luck, you'll need it big time.

Well how he is gonna earn his money back is what I am also bit concerned about. Don't know how long the mining is gonna have its effect. I don't expect him to recover 100% but I do expect him to recover a minimum of 50% before the rate falls. If he somehow manages to get 50% of the cost recovered and sells the components at 50-60% he will still be in profit. But I don't think he will be able to recover 50% of amount spent on the setup in 12months.

One advise to OP is to go with GTX1060. I have heard that GTX1060 has 20Mh/s and GTX1070 has 25Mh/s so at price point of view GTX1060 makes more sense. OP do bit more research.

Thank you once more, now I understand what you meant. I did a new research. The 170 watt usage can be obtained only from non boosted and overclocked GPUs. But in my case, I will need to overclock and boost them at full power, that is why the 1200 PSU will not be enough. I just recalibrated my PSU order and ordered two platinum 750 Corsairs.

Regarding your money concerns - do not be concerned. I am in a hardware forum, asking hardware questions. If I needed financial advice, this would be the last place to seek it.
