[SOLVED] Building a new PC around a GTX1080 - For 144hz and 1440?

I've been looking at parts for a week now, and want to know what kind of monitor I should get, to match the performance a GTX 1080 can produce? I was thinking that I shouldn't get a 144hz monitor at higher resolution, if no matter what CPU/mobo/RAM I get won't be able to play games on it.

So, If I get a high end CPU like an i7-9700K, and a nice motherboard and RAM to match, what's the best performance I should be looking at? Would this new PC be able to get the most out of this monitor?

ASUS ROG Swift PG279Q - 27-inch - 2560 x 1440

Thanks

I suppose it refers to both, but typically people will mention ultrawides for anything over 16:9. WQHD vs QHD.

3440x1440 @75hz (100hz overclocked) are the typical high end panels, but they are over $1000 usually. And take that much more to run. A grand experience I'm sure, but you will be looking at around that 60FPS again.

It really comes down to the games you play most often.

I got the 1080 when it came out and paired it with the exact same monitor. My cpu is quite old (i7 920, more than 10 years old now!) and I get around 70-90fps on average on gpu intensive games. This is with high graphic settings at 1440p resolution. Even so, i really like the monitor and you may get better fps with a faster cpu. Plus, the faster refresh rate is also great for videos, and the IPS display looks really nice. Overall I would recommend it.

If you want to know specific performance numbers, you should look at benchmarks and reviews of the 1080, where its usually paired with high-end cpus.

1440p 60hz is a good match. I can't say 144hz for a GTX1080 any longer. You'll get above 60FPS in every title, but the late release high requirements games are more like 70-80FPS at most.

You might look into RTX2070 as well in place of the GTX1080.

Nothing wrong with overbuying though. You'll keep that monitor longer than the GPU, that was my plan.

Got the GTX1080 and the PG279Q at launch. For the last few years it has been great for the games I play, but I haven't really bought anything in the last year or two that would be considered a high end title.

I won't upgrade my GPU this time around, maybe in the future. How about a 120hz monitor? Anything will be smoother than 60 right? Haha. There are so many different components these days.

When someone says 1440, do they mean 2560 x 1440, or 3440 x 1440?
