Hi guys,

I am building a PC from scratch for personal use at home and I have decided to use the motherboard ASUS B85M-G. I really like high-ends ASUS motherboards, but unfortunately, I cannot afford them!

Anyway, I searched for a suitable memory which will fit the ASUS B85M-G motherboard. I plan to use four DDR3 8GB 1600MHz memory modules on the ASUS B85M-G motherboard. i.e to get a total of 32GB of RAM. Below is the link for the QVL of the ASUS B85M-G motherboard, 4th choice from the top:

http://

The only memory module I could find after contacting several IT retailers is a 8GB DDR3 1600MHz Kingston memory module with part number KVR16LN11/8. Unfortunately, I cannot see this memory module from the QVL of the ASUS B85M-G motherboard. However, there is one, which is quite close to it... It's the one with part number KVR16N11/8-SP. Do you guys think that I can still buy the KVR16LN11/8 Kingston memory? Will the motherboard remain stable and run without issues with four of these KVR16LN11/8 Kingston memory? I heard that ASUS motherboards tend to become unstable when you do not use the memories from the QVL.

Any advice are the most welcome.

Thanks for reading

Regards

Thanks for your reply guys! :)

I did the reverse as Ghislain and Bearmann mentioned, and I checked on the G-SKILL website. It says that the F3-12800CL10S-8GBXL memory will work fine with the ASUS B85M-G motherboard. I did it only for the G-SKILL because Crucial etc are not available in my country. Please check here:

http://www.gskill.com/en/product/f3-12800cl10s-8gbxl

It is mentioned in the QVL part just below the picture. If I use four of these F3-12800CL10S-8GBXL G-SKILL memory modules, will it be fine? What do you think Calvin7? They did not mention F3-12800CL10S-8GBXL/32 on the website and neither did they mention F3-12800CL10S-8GBXL/8... What should I do in this case? If I buy four of F3-12800CL10S-8GBXL, will it still work on the ASUS B85M-G motherboard? Or will the motherboard be unstable?

Nothing is mentioned about the number of these F3-12800CL10S-8GBXL G-SKILL memory modules with which the motherboard can work fine.

Please advice.

Regards

I went to the G. Skill configurator and found all of these 32GB sets which were tested with your MB:

[RipjawsX] F3-12800CL10Q-32GBXL

[RipjawsZ] F3-12800CL10Q-32GBZL

[Ares] F3-1600C10Q-32GAO

[Ares] F3-1600C9Q-32GAB

[Sniper] F3-1600C9Q-32GSR

[RipjawsX] F3-1600C9Q-32GXM

Thanks for your replys guys.

I contacted the IT retailer and they told me that they cannot import the models you mentioned Bearmann:

F3-12800CL10Q-32GBXL
F3-12800CL10Q-32GBZL
F3-1600C10Q-32GAO
F3-1600C9Q-32GAB
F3-1600C9Q-32GSR
F3-1600C9Q-32GXM

The only model I can get is F3-12800CL10S-8GBXL but as Ghislain already mentioned, it is not advisable to buy four modules separately. It is better to buy a kit of four since all four modules have already been tested for compatibility.

It seems that I am stuck with only 8GB instead of 32GB!!!!

Not necessarily!. If you can buy modules that have a consecutive or a very close serial number, then they will most likely play well together. If a module was built several months or years before the other modules, then it may be using different chips and that could cause issues. When buying a kit, the modules have consecutive serial numbers, but I somehow doubt they really were tested as a kit.

Out of curiosity Ghislain, what does the last column of the table of the QVL of the ASUS B85M-G motherboard mean: "DIMM socket support (Optional)"? It has also got 3 sub columns: 1 DIMM, 2 DIMM and 4 DIMM?

Does it mean that it has been tested with 1 module, 2 modules and 4 modules when there is a black dot in the corresponding table cell?

I'm not trying to change your opinion Ghislain... but as I can see, from the QVL of the ASUS B85M-G motherboard, there is a black dot in the "4 DIMM" table cell for the F3-12800CL10S-8GBXL memory module...

Does this mean that four memory modules of F3-12800CL10S-8GBXL fitted in the ASUS B85M-G motherboard will work without issues?

Yes it does, but it was most likely tested with 4 modules in a kit or modules using the exact same components. That's what I meant by very close serial numbers; in a kit they always are consecutive. Ordering 4 modules at a different time from 4 resellers certainly won't guarantee they are the same. As an example, I bought a G.Skill kit that has the same part number as one that I already had in an older motherboard; they look the same and have the same characteristics, but they are quite different (old kit is compatible; the new one isn't).

It means that you can use 4 of those modules, one in each slot and it will work. (There is no difference between these modules and a 4 DIMM matched set except that teh matched set have been tested and shown to work together.) The issue is that even a very minor difference in RAM manufacturing between different modules can cause them not to work together. Even if you pull them off the same production line on the same day, they won't always work together. Even worse if some time has elapsed between the modules manufacturing date. The manufacturer may have switched components or changed specifications without changing the RAM part number. Sometimes a voltage increase or other change can get them to work together- there are experts here who can help with that. So you could get 4 separate modules and they may work together, but they may not. Whats the store return policy on the RAM? The manufacturer is unlikely to warranty them if they were not purchased as a matched set.

I should elaborate one of my points. The manufacturer will warranty that each DIMM works separately, but won't warranty that they will work together unless they were purchased as a matched set.

Do any of your stores sell a MB with RAM included? They would have to guarantee it then it seems.

Nahh....You are 100% totally right! And so is Ghislain. I think that I have to change some specs and try to get a kit of RAM which fits in a motherboard. Do you think ASRock motherboards are better than ASUS?

It doesn't matter which motherboard you buy. If you can purchase a 32 GB kit, then there's a good chance it will work in an Asus, Gigabyte, MSI, ASRock or any other motherboard. It just hasn't been tested and therefore it isn't officially supported, but the XMP profile should still make it work reliably at it's rated speed. It isn't as bad as you seem to believe; personally I'd buy a quality 32 GB kit since the risk of running into compatibility issues is very low.

GhislainG makes a good point.

I actually do have to change motherboard because the kit of 32GB RAM I may be getting in a store here (according to a friend of mine) is not DDR3 but DDR4. It will not fit this ASUS B85M-G. Hence I need to look for a new motherboard in more or less the same price range which accepts DDR4.
