I am building a new PC in the very near future (coming days/weeks) but I'm really not sure about the GPU.

I will likely be going with a 13600K, Z790 (looking at the MSI pro Z790-A Wifi), with a cheaper DDR5 kit until there's more out there. I like playing fairly graphic intensive games on higher settings, and I have a 1440P 165hz monitor. I will not go 4K. I would like to use RT.

I'm not really sure what my best bang for buck GPU is. Current used market in my area (in Canada) 3070's tend to go for about 500, 3080's about 700 (these are higher performing models...FTW3, Strix, Gaming X trio etc...). A new 4070 runs at least 900 for a decent one. Comparable AMD cards run a lot more and availability is scarce so they are not really worth considering.

I don't think it's worth looking at models higher up the chain than this for what I need...and I'd rather keep the cost down.

Thanks!

Cut cost where you can. Find a B760 DDR4 board that can handle the 13600K / KF such as this board down below. Add a set of 2x16GB DDR4 3600 CL18 and don't go overboard on your case and SSD.

steer clear of anything 8 gb i recommend a min of 16gb ..
I have the ARC 770 gpu matched with a 5600x at the moment and its solid little gpu for what you pay for it.
100% on a previous post they keep updating the drivers and the card seems to get better and better !!

As for cost cutting where can ( also previous post ) my main is the 7800x3d and 7900xtx but my ARC 770 build is planned to be a all intel build so i was looking at a B660i rog strix ITX board currently retailing at $349 aud or the b760i rog strix itx at $369aud matched with the 13600k and ddr5 ..

unless youre set on upgrading to a 13900k and/or doing some over clocking the vrms on them 2 boards i mentioned or any decent b660 / b760 board should be fine for a stock 13600k !!

I personally dont like intel for my main ( socket life span annoys me ) i would go a AM5 platform for life span my self but just my 2 cents on it

CND currency is quite close to AUD ..

gigabyte do cheaper b660s and 760s that are ddr4 but i dont like them due to some bad boards ive had in the past ..

A great card that you may still find is a 6950xt it crushes the 4070 and atleast in my country ( Australia )its cheaper than the 4070

4070 it is if you can afford .. Do not buy a 30 series unless it is a second hand 12GB 3080 or better (if you care about the price) .. and think to buy one 16GB (not 2x8) module and plan to add another in the future because those new AAA games use more than 16GB

You might have a look at the Intel arc gpus like the a770 as well. They are a like behind but seem to keep improving drivers.
I was an early adopter when AMD got back in the GPU game. I'm not doing the poor driver BS again lol.

Not a bad idea going with a 760...I could save a good bit there. But the difference between the DDR4 boards and DDR5 boards is only like 20 bucks. Same goes for 32gb of decent DDR5 ram vs DDR4. I would think the extra 40 or so dollars there is worth it just for future upgrade considerations?

I won't do the ARC...see above, I hate driver issues. 😤

I haven't done intel in a long while, the last 4 I've built for my house are AMD. That said, intel seems to have killed it on the 13th gen. The AMD motherboards are also more costly comparatively...but I would really like to stick with them so I'm a bit torn.

If i go with intel I would be good with the B760...that saves a bit of money. I likely won't overclock my CPU. I’ve played around with it, but i just dont care to do it. I wouldnt upgrade the CPU either...if i did it would be way down the road and changing everything again because...intel.

Ive also had some bad luck with GB boards. I had to RMA my first AM4 board 3 times! Never had an issue with Asus or MSI.

The 6950 is at least 300 more then the 4070 here and its really hard to find. Actually it's really close in price to the 7900xt and 4070ti, which is dumb.
The best value right now is the 7900xt at $800. Costs the same as the 4070ti.

The 6950xy and 4070ti are similar in performance, no card "crushes" the other.

Yeah the 7900 and 4070ti are a bit more than I want to spend on a GPU and probably overkill for 1440?

You think the 4070 is worth the extra 300 dollars over the used 3080?

I wouldnt go that low with memory. Looking at a 2x16 kit to start.
I think Newegg has the 6950 xt for 600 now as well.
Not in Canada...they are over 900 here. AMD always seems expensive here.

Been reading up more on the various cards and in particular issues starting to come up with the amount of memory. Might be worth holding out for a GPU with at least 16gb?

I can grab a used 3090 for about 900 bucks...which is the minimum price point for a new 4070. That might be worth grabbing?

I've also found a used 6950 xt I could probably grab for about 700...or there's 6900 xt, and 6800 xt cards out there for less. Are AMD's drivers better these days? I'm assuming these cards aren't very available right now because they are clearing them out to make way for a 7800 series card...maybe that is worth waiting for?

Too many considerations lol.

there a few types of people that complain about AMD drivers
1. Nvidia fanboys holding on to the last excuse of why they support Nvidia's <Mod Edit> business practices
2. butthurt early 5000series users . ( need to let that go now)
3. people who have never owned a AMD gpu but follow the masses ..

Ive had the 5700xt red devil ive currently got the 7900xtx red devil the 6900xt red devil 6700xt spectral white hellhound and the 6650xt sakura hellhound ..

Ive had no issues with drivers on my late 5000series none on the 6000series and i have a small issue on my 7900xtx where it would boost to over 3000mhz and crash the computer while simple browsing the net ..reset and its fine
seems to of fixed it self i think through driver updates ( which is what their there for )

ARC 770 is actually fine its very stable drivers for a new entry into cards the card its self is not amazing but to be expected for a first attempt as such into DIY gpu's

This is me lol. I had always used Nvidia. I decided to try AMD for once and I very briefly had a 5700xt...crashes galore and the thing ran hot as the sun. I returned it.

Maybe I will have to give AMD another shot. On paper they are more in line with what I'm looking for.

What you spend now on AM5 your going to save over the next 2-3 years ( maybe longer)with just CPU upgrades
LGA1700 is almost a dead platform 14th will be new cpu new motherboard and ddr5 only boards so they will be just as pricey if not more as the current AM5 platform with only ( unless intel fundamentally change their socket lifespan ) 2 years in it

I see Intel having to change the socket life span soon .. Ive seen in some reports they are really losing BIG $$$$$ over AMD now like 10 - 15 year lows in profits !!

I don't upgrade my CPU often. With AM4 I went in early with a 1600x, I gave the board and processor to one of the kids and just got him a 5600. Should last him a while longer. I'd probably do the same with AM5...grab one now, and maybe an upgrade end of life. That said, I had to buy a higher end board to have the option to do that upgrade. The cheaper AM4 chipsets did not really allow for that. So I look at it like this...AMD CPU (which costs more for comparable performance), plus a mid to high end board that costs significantly more, and I can save on an upgrade to the CPU later...or get a cheaper intel CPU with a cheaper B series board, and I have to upgrade both down the road. It's probably pretty close to a wash.

The only reason I'd really go AMD at this point is because I've had such a great experience with their products since Ryzen launched, and I still despise Intel for all those years of price gouging.

I love the 4090 i think its a monster and it does without any doubt crush whatever AMD has and for that there is a premium price attached !!
BUT
every other Nvidia product is over priced rubbish compared to what AMD is offering in my opinion..
RT despite my previous ideals on it is becoming a more and more used system ..
DLSS is moot when you hardly need it with a 4090 and everything else is just nerfing native !!

All that said its just my way of thinking on saving money and being smart with purchasing products i want people to have the best experience with their PC building and life span !!

what people buy in the end is always their choice !!

Well...I ordered the whole PC and wound up going with an AM5 board and a 7600x. Might lose marginal performance to the Intel I was considering, but I also saved some cash because of sales, got a nicer board, and it will last me a long time with AM5 I'm sure.

Still haven't picked a GPU though lol. Gonna go new and it'll either be a 4070 or 6950xt.

4070 or 4070 Ti?

I’d go 6950 if you’ve got the money. Hands down in raw performance faster than the 4070ti(not sure about ray tracing). But then you don’t have to deal with vram issues as well. Newegg has a nice one for 600 right now. 200 less than a 4070ti. No brainer.

4070 or 4070 Ti?
4070...not the TI, that's way more expensive here. I went ahead and ordered the 6950xt. It was cheaper and I think is just better.
