Building a new Pc

Im looking to upgrade from my Pc im currently selling. Curent specs are:
CPU - I5 3570k 4.4Ghz Oc
CPU Cooler - Noctua NH-D14
GPU - Msi GTX 670 PE
Motherboard - AsRock z77 extreme 4
Power - Silverstone 600 watt
Memory - Gskill sniper 2x4gb
Monitor - 2x 1080p monitors

I am selling this rig to a friend and am looking to do a complete upgrade. My plan is to build around a gtx 980 ti with possible liquid cooling. My choices between proccesors are i7 5820k, i7 6700k (out of stock or overpriced everywhere), i7 4790k, i5 6600k, i5 4690k. liquid cooling on that also. I'd like to stick with MSI and AsRock because of familiarity but am open to suggestions.

I will be overclocking and possibly buying a 1440p, 144hz, gsync monitor if its in the budget. Could someone please help with this build.

I suggest going for the latest hardware since u can afford a GTX 980 Ti and want to go 1440p.. It's not really futureproofing but its at least better than going back into history with 4-5th generation.

The 6th generation cpu's will soon be available again, certainly with xmas coming.

For motherboard I really love ASUS due the better options in UEFI and better looking GUI. But that's just my opinion, ofc!

Man i love the fast responses on here!!! i probably shouldve mentioned my budget. Its around $2500.00 Which processor would you recomend? Ive heard the skylanes arent as good at OC as the older haswells. Also what would you suggest to future proof?

Futureproof: Skylake 100%
Overclocking: i7 4790k

But like I said, the Skylake is the best CPU on the market at this moment, it doesn't need to be best at overclocking.
Mine is overclocked to 4.6Ghz and is stable.

Even on stock clock, I run BF4 at 199fps and Ultra. And that only with a GTX 970. So I really see no point in overclocking a i7 6700k just yet , unless its for bragging rights 😛

EDIT: Guild Wars 2 (as an MMO) is also at 160 - 210fps, which is very cpu-intensive.. Just so you know, there's no other CPU, even in Haswell and Haswell-E reaching this

Lol completely understandable. Since the 6700k is either sold out or 100.00 dollars more than it should be, would you recommend the I5 5600k? Also how do you like the Corsair H110i, On my last build i was going to get that but everyone talked me out of it and into a Noctua ND-h14. Oh and how is Windows 10 hanlding drivers and games? i know i had a little trouble upgrading to 8.1 originally.

Everything is running like a dream so far.
Also, I really do suggest waiting untill you can get an i7 6700K.. Try looking everywhere and send mails around to ask when the next shipment is. Its what I did 😀
That way you can buy a new mobo (Z170 chipset) with awesome features, nice GUI and UEFI and updating motherboard through internet (BYE BYE FLASH USB!) and DDR4 RAM which is totally up to date and will give you a large margin for many years to come

If you can afford a GTX980 Ti, you should go for the newest and best aswel

For only $50 bucks more this build is SLI-ready w/ a XFX ProSeries 1050W (High quality psu).

An i7 5820k is extremely good aswel, not gonna deny that.

Basically OP, it depends what you want:

- Strictly gaming(& stream/music): i7 6700k
- Video rendering & running more applications at same time (gaming, streaming, music, rendering, etc at same time): i7 5280k

The i7 5280 has 6 cores, which means it perfect for running more apps at the same time. However, the more cores, the less single core performance compared to quad-cores same line. The other way around is true aswel; a quad-core can't really handle all the applications at the same time like an i7 5280k can.

So yeah.. 😛

Well they are close to eachother. Except on the i5 you only got 4 threads (maybe a bit too low depending what your needs are) while the i7 5280k has 12 threads (which is overkill, more than 8 is too many and above will never be used).

So we could be able to answer accordingly if you let us know what your needs are

A Skylake can do the same job as good. It's when you run heavy applications require each a core or more, the i7 5280k is much better. Listening to music/gaming and streaming can be perfectly done on a quad-core.

GTX 980ti in SLI is overkill though.

PCI SSD cards are the fastest SSD's currently known, where even the motherboard bottlenecks it. It can reach reading speeds between 1500 - 2500 MB/s and writing speeds between 1000 - 1500MB/s.

They are awesome but not worth the current prices. I would wait till after xmas (begin January) when shops will lower prices due to having too many at stock

Just to give you an idea; a normal SATA SSD reaches reading speeds around 600-700MB/s at max.. 😉

- 4K.. *chills* No GPU on the market can play 4k stable and very decent just yet. I'm not even going 1440p myself and skip it untill in a year or 2 untill 4k is reasonable playable 144fps. (fuck 60fps, right?)
- Honestly, either go 1 GTX 980 Ti or GTX 980 in SLI, more than enough for 1440p
- CPU: both i7 5280k and i7 6700k, any of them will be a good choice

But since you want to stream etc, maybe go for the i7 5280k

Well it depends how you config and handle your motherboard.

Also, consider the CPI SSD is taking extra PCIe lanes away from your CPU..
So if you want to go a GPU in SLI in 8/8 with skylake, you can forget about that PCI SSD.

With i7 5280k, it shouldn't be a problem since it got 28 lanes available. Perfect with 2 GPU's in SLI + the PCI SSD (8/8/4)
