Building a PC do I need an SSD and HDD

I've built a computer once before which doesn't really mean i know what I am doing but I remember last time I had to format the ssd before the system would even allow me to use it. My question is can I just buy a large ssd and install windows directly to that right out of the box. (I don't have a HDD available)

Yes, you can install an OS on a SSD. You can add a HDD when ever you need to.
