How is this build? It will be used mainly for gaming and school work. Can it run most modern games on ultra/high in 1680 x 1050 resolution?

Yes it should be able to get over 60fps most of the time in games at that resolution with the 280, excellent card for the price.

Another thing that I would change is the CPU to the 4460, same chip with a slightly lower clock speed, you will see virtually no difference for $20 less. Also you are not overclocking, so there is no need whatsoever for a CPU cooler anyways, I would suggest not having it because even the stock cooler can keep it at a good temperature under load at stock speeds.

The PSU is a good choice, but the 650W version of the EVGA PSU is the exact same price, so there is no reason not to switch it out.

With the money you can save switching parts out and not having an aftermarket CPU cooler, I was able to fit an SSD into the build for the boot drive, whether you wish to keep it in there or just pocket the extra money is up to you.
