Just building a pc for my girlfriend and I've never built a low end budget pc. A ryzen 3 1200 is faster than an i3 7100 but with AMD I would need to buy a gpu as well giving it worse value. Will the system be sluggish at all with an i3? She uses it just for Netflix and studying basically.

Solution
Sounds like she would be more suited for a Laptop as a Pentium will do all of that just fine. Yes a I3 7100 is fully capable of Netflix and basic office type work as well as a APU's on AM4 like a A10-9700 which run less than $80 and have better igpu's.

Depends if you intend to do something with this system in the future and will it be hooked up to a monitor or a tv because if you have it hooked up to a tv there will be a strange aspect resolution so you would need a GPU to fix the resolution in with the drivers. But if it was for study and Netflix would you not just be better getting a laptop. And in my experience, Intel is a better-based chip for productivity even if it is an i3. Another point to use Intel is that ryzen benefits from faster ram altho there will be miner drawback and because the system will not be used for gaming. If this was me I would go for Intel because it has better encoding capability for video streaming. But there will always be conflict on which CPU brands better.

Good Look

Actually yeah that is a good option, it's a little slow in basic tasks than a i3 and the igpu is good enough for Netflix 4K or anything less. Price difference now is only $30 as opposed the the $50 it use to be.

That's a great option but would she not be better with a 6100 it's cheaper and performs great in a video streaming setup I use that chip in my HTPC and is great my mum uses it to browse the web and what video. you could also underclock it so it would run quieter as well.

I guess but if they were using a TV they would be better with a apu

All of these chips can handle 4K@ 60hz, Netflix limits 30fps so that can be done on 7 year old Arm SOC all of these are way stronger than that.

APU is a better option over a G4560 if gaming is the concern with no GPU
I3 is a better option if Productivity is a concern

But a G4560 is fully capable of Netflix streaming, basic office work and your general use with relatively little studdering.

No, I meant because the is a strange aspect ratio on a tv and the APU would fix that with a bit of tweaking
