Hi all,
I have been researching and thinking. How do I use a computer. For a past year.

I have figured this:
- Install Win7
- I use camtasia, to edit screen casts. I need to record screencast for 24 hour for up to 2 days at a time.
- Install VMWare on which i will run maximum 1 instance of VMWare. With OS being either WinXP, Win8/8.1, Linux distributions, Mac OS's.
- Will definitely have at least rhee OS. One linux distrib and two most recent Mac OS in use

- I do photoshop for imaging but very minimal

- Firefox will be running all the time
- Notepad++
- Lots of times batch compression of images (like 200 images) hoep to complete that within less than 10sec

- I'm looking for the most snappiest, as close to as 0 wait time for my tasks

So far I have these parts:
-Seagate 2TB 3.5" 7200RPM Internal Hard Drive
-Corsair CSM 450W 80+ Gold Certified Semi-Modular ATX Power Supply
-Fractal Design Define R4 (Black Pearl) ATX Mid Tower

I was waiting for DDR4 the past 2 years but they keep on pushing it, and im figuring price will be to steep at first.

Please recommend a CPU and RAM to purchase.

I was thinking of 16gb of G.SKILL Ripjaws X Series 8GB (2 x 4GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1866 (PC3 14900) Desktop Memory Model F3-14900CL8D-8GBXM (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820231538&nm_mc=AFC-C8Junction&cm_mmc=AFC-C8Junction-_-na-_-na-_-na&cm_sp=&AID=10446076&PID=3938566&SID=)

Thanks

I don't think the performance increase is worth the price increase for the Pro.

If your needs are fairly modest, then a 120GB drive will suffice and I would recommend the EVO. You can always check your current computer to see how much data is on it and see if 120GB is enough.

Writes kill SSDs, true, but it takes a heck of a lot to kill them. I believe I read somewhere that a 256gb drive had 100tb of info written on it before it died. (Just 1 user's experience)
There was a chart and the expected life of a 120Gb was 10 years, a 256GB was 16 or something. I've had mine for 4 years now with no problems :)

You won't want to max out 120GB either, you'd want it more at 100GB max. I have mine at 110GB right now and it gets some "bumps" where...
DDR4 will not be that amazing compared to DDR3 when it's released (it needs time). I'm sure it will also be a heck of a lot more expensive.

All ram is mostly the same, don't waste too much time contemplating it. If you are on a tight budget, 8gb of ram will be ok for now and a SSD is recommended as you want things to be as close to 0 wait time as possible.

The samsung EVO 120GB SSD is around $80. Samsung is making the fastest SSDs at the moment.
The crucial MX100 256GB is only $110 if you need more storage for less. It will still be miles ahead in speed compared to a HDD, just not quite as fast as the samsung.

Thanks jaraldo. Is the EVO much better than the Samsung 840pro? Which one is recommended between the two.

I was thinking I just need the ssd for installing my main os on right? I'm not sure how VMWare works, but does that need to go on the ssd too?

I heard the writes kill a ssd, so a goal is to keep writing to a minimum? This was why i was shying away from ssd. Becuase im sure os does millions of writes

Ah ok thanks very much I'll be going for that EVO then. Althought I was very pissed with Samsung lately as they were in the news for causing sicknesses to their employees. Is there anything better than it that's not Samsung?

Really? Hadn't heard that (hadn't checked either)
*just checked*

The mx100 would be my 2nd choice and as I said, any SSD would be better than an HDD. I think they are probably 5x or 10x faster. I know my computer boots up in 10 seconds now compared to 50 seconds with a HDD.

Just my opinion, but pretty much 100% of all corporations are somehow making consumers, employees and the world in general sicker. Just my 2 cents 😉
