Building computer on carpet

Is it okay to build a computer while standing on carpet if you properly ground yourself?

If not, if I put some cardboard or something on the ground, will I be okay?

You will be fine just make sure to touch something grounded (i.e. metal desk, chair) before handling components.

^+1. I just rebuilt my computer on carpet/microfiber couch yesterday, and I'm typing from it.
Also, make sure to not wear socks or anything with a sole. The friction between what's on your feet and the carpet is what generates static. Most people's feet, however, do not

Wear your undies while building no way you could get a static shock.

I've done it. Just try not to move around to much and DON'T pick up parts by the shiny gold contacts. Other then that you should be fine.

I decided to just build it on my wooden desk instead.

If you build it on cardboard, then that should still be fine.

When building my pc do I keep the power into the wall outlet but with the psu turned of or do I take it out of the power completely, putting the pc on the floor while using an ESD wristrap? The floor being carpet, I will sit on the floor, I have already done this and built the system and nothing happened but was I just lucky?

I just built mine on carpet. Although I did touch a PSU plugged into the wall every 5 mins or so.
