Hi all
Like I said, this is my first time, and I'm pretty stumped.

Gigabyte K8NS Ultra-939
AMD Athlon 64 3200+ with winchester core
1G Crucial DDR RAM
128mb ATI Radeon 9800SE
160G Western Digital Caviar Serial ATA drive

That's all I've got plugged in right now, I'm trying to get these going before I complicate things with the DVD drive, etc.

So, the problem looks like this:

I turn it on for the first time, it beeps, says
Award Modular BIOS... etc,
Main Processor: AMD Athlon(tm) 64 processor 3200+
<CPUID:0FF0 Patch ID:0041
Memory Testing: 1048576K OK
CPU clock frequency: 200Mhz

DDR Dual Channel Enabled

and at the bottom, the "press DEL to enter setup" etc.

Unfortunately, at this point it locks up pretty hard, not responding to the ps/2 keyboard, and not changing or making beeps or anything.

So I switch it off, and now, when I turn it on, it doesn't beep, and the monitor doesn't even know anything has happened (that is, it doesn't appear to make any difference if the computer is on or off).

Now, I wait maybe 15 or 20 minutes, power it up, and it does the same thing as the first time.

Sometimes some of the text about CPU frequency or the memory check is garbled.

It does respond to the keyboard before it locks up, as if I hit the delete key, it says "prepareing to enter setup" at the bottom. But it still locks up really hard right after that, and doesn't come back for a while.

Fan/heatsink seem to be working fine.

My biggest concern is that "CPU Clock Frequency 200Mhz" thing, since I don't think that's correct.

Is the CPU bad? Or the mobo?

Any thoughts? All help would be greatly appreciated, and if I can provide any more information, please don't hesitate to ask.

Also, if this is the wrong forum for this, please let me know, I wasn't sure if the CPU or mobo forum would be best.

Thanks!

That 200mhz is correct. That is the FSB (HTT) for your cpu.

You forgot to mention the most important part of your system - what PSU are you using?

Thanks everyone! I brought it to the local computer shop, and it turned out the video card was burned out.

What PSU are you using. The question is what caused the Vid card to fail...
