AMD Athlon 64 X2 4400+ sck939

I would change this for a opty 170 or 165, better overclocking which should make the system last longer

DFI Lanparty ut nf4 Ultra-D

This one or the ati one if you want to spend a bit more.

OCZ EL Platinum rev2 (2)2x512 PC3200 ddr 400 dual channel kits(2-2-2-5) 2gigs total

Cool

EVGA Geforce 7900 GT 256mb pci (500mhz clock, 1500mhz mem freq)

7900 GT's can overclock like crazy, with a voltage mod.

74gig 10,000rpm WD Raptor SATA

Fast but i would go for two bigger drives and raid 0 them, should save you some money too!

Zalman CNPS9500 hsf

OCZ ModStream 550W PS

NEC ND-3550a burner

Creative SB Audigy2 ZS

and a Thermaltake Tsunami blk mid atx

Everything else is good, i've got that case and i like it.

Looks fine to me and I agree that you can look at the Opty option if you aren't afraid of overclocking.

One change I would suggest is the Ram, get a 2 x 1gb kit not 4 x 512mb. The 2 x 1gb will run faster and when Vista comes out you can upgrade to 4 x 1gb. If you go with 4 x 512mb you will have to replace some of those when you want to upgrade so don't waste the money.

While I could tell you something that is way better, but only if you submerge your PC in dry ice and push it down a well to lower the temperature, it's a waste of time.

That system looks really good. I will say that with Core2 knocking on our doors any chance of a future-proof system right now is just about nil, but for now it looks great.

For a long term PC build that is a pretty good budget. It's high end, but as we approch AM2 and new Intel chips that " leave Cell in the dust" <-- (from slashdot) do not think that buy stock here. Go towards the overclocking options, you'll be just as fast and will have it there as an option down the road, if you choose to do it.

Cool! Thanks for all the info.

I'll have to look at Opterons and maybe seeing if its worth getting 2x1g ram

since your getting a DFI board I assume you are going to Overclock so I would suggest like everyone else to go for a opteron. They run a lot cooler then X2's and also overclock the best. And G.Skill has some PC4000 ram for 171.00 which is a good deal and will help in overclocking

OK I have decided to go with the Opteron 170 and OC it to around 2.4-2.5 area
now I just need to know what speed ram to get. Would it be bad to get pc3200 or do i need higher like Pc4000??

Good choice on the opty. Well getting PC4000 RAM will give you more headroom for overclocking. You can OC your CPU to a point without OC'ing your RAM
