Building my first gaming rig/computer! Advice

Wow lots of links sorry about that never done this before! 😉

I hope/plan to buy these componets to build my first computer this summer when I get my first job and earn some money! So basically what I'm asking is 3 things!

1. It will come out to about 870$ from Newwegg! Are these the best parts I can get for my money our should I save another 100-200$ and get some better ones?

2. Will this be able to max out games like BF3 and Arma 3(when released) with a minimum of 30-35 fps?

3. Am I missing anything else I should need to buy or get? Anything else you pros might want to mention? Thanks for your time I know its alot!

you can save up $50 or so by getting a 2x4gb kit instead. unless you got some more memory intensive tasks to use them for, 8gb is more than plenty for gaming. when you do need more, memory's easy enough to add.

never heard of the cooler, but i reckon for the price, it's not going to perform much compared to Hyper 212 EVO. the latter just has a better bang for your buck.

in case you're not OCing; i5-3470 and a quality H77/B75/Z75 board. otherwise ignore this paragraph.

don't see a DVD drive if that's going to matter or an OS. but in case you don't need those, then you should have saved up a bit if you followed my advice. now you can either just put the money in your pocket, or spend it on a better GPU say, the 660ti.

performance-wise, no way of knowing with Arma3, but i doubt it's the next "Crysis". BF3 however should be very, very playable.

also try to look out for a deal from other shops via PCpartpickers.com. you may find some discounts or bundles elsewhere.

The whole setup looks really nice! With that case your going to lose out on the usb 3.0 motherboard headers, but its really not that big of a deal (I got a usb 2.0 case with a usb 3.0 motherboard aswell). Your motherboard does have usb 2.0 headers, so the front usb ports will still work! Great cpu! I would change the Seidon 120M to a Hyper 212 evo +; its $20 cheaper and gets the same performance! I got my i5 3570k to 4.5ghz on my Hyper 212 evo +; I can go higher but 4.5 is fine for me! You also don't need 16gb of Ram (unless you plan on Spawning 600 Dragons in Skyrim )_) don't ask! . Get the same ram just a 2x4gb or a 1x8gb pack (if you wanted 32gb in the future). Saves you another $40. I play super high end games and do video editing, I never use more then 4 gb of ram at a time, 8gb is just nice to have! Great Power Supply; you shouldn't have any issues with that! Here is where you need to change (kinda big)! With the money you save from he ram and cpu cooler get a Msi 660 TI Pe http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814127696 Trust me!! The Gtx 660 is not the greatest card! The 660ti is way better and the Msi version blows most Gtx 670 out of the water! You system will easily get 60+ fps ULTRA on BF3 (I pretty much have the same build) Good Luck with your system! My best advice, is look up MULTIPLE benchmarks for these things, until your ready to buy! When looking up 660ti benchmarks, make sure they use the Msi 660ti; because there is a HUGE difference in power and performance from the Msi triple overvolt feature!

Right now I am on my 2TB HDD 7200RPM and prior to this I was on my 64GB SSD.
But my god, are HDD's just terrible, absolutely terrible, the launch time for my OS does not bother me so much but god damn, HDD's are ridiculously slow when it comes to launching programs.

With my HDD when I login I have to wait for windows to load a bit more, for my programs (utor, skype, msn) to run, once they are ready I still have to wait a further 5-10seconds at which point if I click my browser, nothing happens for like 20seconds.

Do yourself a HUGE favour and buy a 120GB+ SSD, 64Gb wont cut it. A lot of people told me to get 64GB, install most used programs and use HDD for everything else.

Well I put my game on my SSD, started running out of space and took them to my HDD, at which point I could not run my games on my HDD because steam did not recognise them (I tried everything to make this work, ended up installing windows on my HDD).
I could not update my games neither, or install some programs on my D drive.

When I run my minecraft server + everything else in the background my computer uses between 4-6GB of ram, so 8GB is good.

SSD if you want a faster boot and shorter load times, but have few files to store.

HDD if you don't have an external HDD at least for file storage.

aside from that, it's all based on your personal preference. i'm fine with HDDs as i turn on my PC as soon as i come home from work, have a drink and lie down a bit. by then i'm ready to game. plus i don't have a lot of startup tasks anyway. but if 2-5 minutes is too long a boot time for you, SSD it is.
