building my first pc, don't know what parts to scrap from old prebuilt?

Hi! So I have this old pre build gaming pc from asus called the rog g30, and I've decided to upgrade the gpu to a 1080ti and move everything into a new case for further future upgrades.

Would I run into any compatibility issues?
any suggestions for cases?
can i still use the 980 somehow or should i sell it lol

specs for the asus g30 (all i could find on asus website right now, will update if i find anything else)
cpu: i7 4770k
gpu: gtx 980
chipset: intel z97

Because the website only list up to config and some online image of its innards show liquid AIO as one possible configuration which will affect case compatibility.

* Where are you? What is your budget for the case?
Because cases' pricing and availability can vary greatly.

* Which 1080Ti are you looking at? & How many drives (HDD/SSD) do you have or are looking forward to having?
Affect case compatibility and/or suitability to your wants/needs.

* Take measurement of the PSU to confirm if it was ATX standard ~150(W)x86(H)mm at the back; PSU depth can vary. Otherwise you're also going to have to replace the PSU (which frankly is a recommended course of action to properly support an i7+GTX1080Ti config).

the graphics card is asus strix 1080ti o11g
i have one ssd and one hdd, might add more

i think the power is kinda trash...probably gonna replace it even if its the right size, but yeah its er standard size

The I7-4770K with a z97 board, get a good cooler for it and get that puppy overclocked. it will serve you well, good chip set up

You can just take a photo of the inside of the case, and navigate to imgbb.com to upload it. When the upload is completed, the site will give a BBCode thumbnail linked in a text box that you can just copy-paste into the reply box on Toms forum.

Well, $500 would get you nearly any case out there.

But it's rather difficult to recommend a case without the actual MB size, because some image online of its innards and back side seems to suggest that it has a mATX MB.

In term of salvaging parts, you're probably looking at being able to reuse the MB+CPU+RAM+AIO(probably need new thermal paste ~$5-10)+HDD+SSD.

Yeah, the tube of the AIO kinda blocked the specific model name, but I can see the Z87M part of the model name; so I can tell that it is an ASUS Z87 mATX motherboard, therefore it shouldn't give you any trouble installing it into a new case.

For a solid fit with the mATX board, I'd recommend these four cases:
Thermaltake Core V21
Corsair 350D
Fractal Design Mini C TG
In win 303

Other options for case that would be somewhat oversized for a mATX MB (for future changes/upgrades/builds):
Fractal Design Meshify C

Or the Phanteks Pro M SE Tempered Glass (with some extra brackets for SSD and HDD)
And the Corsair Air 540

Both the latter options are quite big for a mid-tower case.

For something completely different, you can try the Thermaltake P3 SE, but the tube of the AIO used in the build seems pretty short, so it probably wouldn't work with this case.


You cannot use the GTX980 alongside your new STRIX 1080Ti; I guess if you want a power hungry solution for 2-3 more screens in addition to those supported by the 1080Ti then maybe... otherwise just sell it.

Plus while the MB appears to have a second PCIe x16 slot for a second graphic card, it is already occupied by the Wifi card, I think.
