Building my first system - plan to do AVCHD video editing on adobe photoshop &am

I am a beginner, plan to do AVCHD video editing on adobe photoshop & premiere elements 10. I have a Canon VIXIA HFS10, with solid state memory that I will need to download to the computer. Also will need to download about 40 digital Mini-DVs from a series of Canon ZR20 & ZR35 video camera's I had before they bit the dust. Was wondering if someone could help me with designing a system that would work well and stay under $2000. I figure why spend more when I am a dad doing this in his spare time for the kids.

Questions I have is this the right strategy? Would it be better price/performance wise to use 128G SSD for the operating system - with one 7200rpm data drive? or use ssd, data drive, render drive? Will the money I am putting into the GPU be better used elsewhere? Any help would be appreciated. Keep in mind it would be good to target about 1600, so I can use the other 400 for a decent monitor. Thanks in advance for your help.

Spend the extra $50 and get the i7 2600K. It is newer and has hyperthreading which I am pretty sure is utilized by most video/image editing software now. You would of course need to find a new motherboard with an LGA 1155 socket but that is easy.

For the storage. A 64 gb ssd would suffice for the OS. You could then have just 1 7200 drive of 2 tb and skip the 1 tb. One thing about hds, look around for cheaper prices. $250 is very very expensive for a 2 tb drive. The 1 TB drive you have listed is on Amazon for $74.95 at the moment and that is a great deal considering the decreasing availability of hard drives since the Thailand flooding. You could get 2 x 1 TB drives and set them up in raid configuration and spend half the money.

roblaw42 - Thanks for the feedback, appreciate it - I will definately do that on the drives - I thought they were a bit pricey at Newegg, good suggestion on the CPU. I presume when I order the motherboard and CPU, that a CPU system/fan comes with it - or should I plan on ordering a separate or additional system for cooling the CPU, & do I even need it if I am not gaming? Also, any comments on the software I am ordering? appreciate any feedback.

Go to amazon and buy the HDDs they are currently cheaper over there

@dsg99, if u do not overclock it, stock cooler is pretty much what u will need.
Also for i7-2600k, get a Z68 mobo, since it will allow u to use quicksync.

Agree with vitornob. Stock cooler should be enough. Monitor the temperature of the cpu over the first few months when you are doing your most intense work and if it goes too high, you may want to buy a cooler. The Hyper 212 is pretty cheap and will easily get the job done.

Well folks, took all the advice, have done a lot of reading. I believe I am zeroing in on the system. Any comments in regards to my mobo, gpu, & ram choices - there are so many to select from, and what I am concerned about is making sure everything will work together. Comments would be appreciate, here is the list - about ready to place the order - keep in mind that I plan to get a couple 7200 rpm drives from amazon, one for OS, one for data. Thanks for any advice, also if you have experience, I am worried all this stuff will fit in the case I have selected as well.
