Looking to build my first as soon as the newest nVidia cards are available. This will be strictly a gaming rig; nothing more. I'm just wondering if I need/should get an i7 or if I can do with an i5 for a couple of years. I'll appreciate any information.

Thanks.

You'll not feel the difference in gaming when comparing i5 and i7, because most games do not utilize more than 4 cores, sometimes just 2. However, future is unknown, maybe more games optimized for more than 4, but we don't know yet.
What performance, what settings, what resolution, what refresh rate?

If you're looking for a build with the 'coming soon' Nvidia then I don't think I can help you since the pricing isn't out yet, even if they are in the future, the market will inflate it for a while since it's a new card.

well for the CPU you dont really need more than a socket 1150 haswell i5, as games dont really take advantage of the multithreaded multicore capabalities of the i7. as far as the new nvidia cards, you will be paying a pretty penny when they come out but they are probably worth the wait. so for cpu grab an Intel Core i5-4670K from microcenter they have really good deals on them

Thanks for the replies. I've been told a few times that I won't need anything more than the i5 seeing that the rig will be solely for gaming but some have recommended the i7 just to be ahead of the game (no pun intended). I understand stretching to get better components like power supplies or fans or cases with better airflow and cable management. But the CPU is the only piece that has me wondering if getting the next level up will actually cause me see to see/feel an obvious benefit.
I appreciate any and all replies.

Thanks.
