Hello,

So far I have always been a laptop user but I want to get a desktop. Since I do know a bit about computers I decided to build my own computer but before I order the parts I thought I would put it up for review since this is my first time doing this. I was thinking:

Corsair Carbide 300R
Corsair CX600M
Gigabyte GA-Z87X-UD3H
Kingston HyperX Blu, 2x8GB
Intel Core i7 4770
ZOTAC GTX-770 4GB
Samsung 840 EVO Desktop (250GB, 2.5")
WD Red (2000GB, 3.5", NAS)
LG BH16NS, BluRay/DVD

ASUS MX299Q (29'')

I have done a fair bit of research but I want to know what other people think of this build. Some background I live in switzerland so i am a bit more limited in the selection i have no newegg close by saddly. Some of my concerns are

  • That the computer is future proof and will run things in 4 years and not break down or be slow.
    Is 16 gb ram enough?
Is a WD black drive worth it? For me the red is 100 bucks and the black is 150.
is the LG BH16NS good quality product? I would like a bluray drive, but not sure if that is a good option.
    Is a sound card needed?
Is ASUS MX299Q a good display, I want a screen that i can multi task on no problem, like half word open on one half of the screen and a website on the other half.
should i get an aftermarket cooler for the i7 4770, I like it quite and i have read mixed reviews
and finally I am also looking for a good keyboard, I am used to a thinkpad T series keyboard, it gives a very nice tactile feedback and a great typing experince, can anyone recommend any keyboards? is the Cherry STREAM XT MultiMedia Keyboard a good keyboard. Keyboards are are to find here with US layout instead of german so I am also considering importing one.

Thank you all in advance for your help and time.

Hari

1) you're using a high end CPU so it will be as good as it can be 4 years from now.
2) if this is for gaming, 16gb is overkill. By any standard 16gb is PLENTY right now, if not excessive unless you do a lot of video editing.
3) For the drive, LG is a good brand, I don't know exactly about the model but overall I would trust LG.
4)Sound card is not needed as that mobo has built in amazing sound quality.
5) Asus is a to monitor manufacturer, as far as the multi tasking, that is a windows feature and any screen will be able to put side by side windows.
6) An after market would be nice, but not necessary. A coolermaster hyper 212 or hyper tx(?) would get the job done.
7) For a keyboard, I game on a generic slim microsoft multimedia keyboard and love it. Great feel to the keys.

And also, since you are not using a k series CPU, you can go with a h87 chipset board and save money.

Why are you getting a 4gb 770? As a single card it will be no faster than the 2gb version and even in SLI running high resolution displays there are reviews showing there is still a minimal to no difference between the 4gb and 2gb cards.

It is quite a decent PC. I would go with another 770 model + other CPU model though. For the 770: EVGA or Gigabyte. Those are the best 770 models on the market atm (also very good for OC).

For the CPU, take the 4770k. The "k" will allow you to OC the CPU and make the aftermarket cooler worth it. There is no reason for buying an aftermarket cooler if you are not planning on overclocking actually =).

16 GB of RAM is MORE than enough for you build. 8GB will do already, as most games don't even need 8GB yet (games like BF4 will benefit from it though). For you build I would use at least 8GB, 16GB would just be a very nice extra =).

For the keyboard, I am using a sharkoon skiller (about 20$) and it is very decent =). For your budget, you should probably look at some nice razer keyboard. The razer deathstalker is a very decent one. For the mouse, a razer deathadder is quite nice. I know there are other, cheaper / similar performance keyboards/mouses on the market, but seeing your budget, you shouldn't go for some cheap Chinese brand that doesn't look nice! (That is just my opinion though).

I'm not sure about the Asus monitor/ WD red HDD, but both brands makes very reliable products (I own an Asus monitor myself and I got some nice extra features with it!).

The minimum wattage for a 770 is 600w, so you can go for 600w, but I would recommend upgrading it as otherwise you won't have enough power to OC your components.

PS: For an aftermarket cooler: The Cooler Master Hyper 212 Evo is a very reliable, not very expensive aftermarket cooler!

Thank you for the replies so far. :)

For the screen I am more concerned with the horizontal size so that you can have 2 windows open at the same time and still see it all without having to scroll sideways.

I do currently have 16 gb ram in my laptop and I do go above 8gb atleast once a week. I normally keep a lot of browser tabs and progs in general open. I do close it down when I am doing anything taxing like After effects or gaming.

So for PSU Corsair RM Series RM750, Processor+Cooler Cooler Master Hyper 212 Evo and i7 4770K, and GPU EVGA GTX 770 SC ACX 2GB

for the keyboard I will probably visit a couple of different PC shops and try out the display models first to see how they feel, I am really pick with keyboards because for me the typing experience is very important, i plan on going back to school this year so i will also spend a fair amount of time typing on it. However I value quality and usage over visual appeal.

I think the RS is oke, but I prefer the TX, it is the upgraded version of the basic CX corsair model. I know for sure you will be fine with the TX, can't really comment on the RS line.

I read online that he RM and TX should be similar quality wise but the RM is quieter, What would you think of the Noctua CPU NH-U9B SE2 (92mm) cooler? I really would like it to be as quiet as possible.

I think I have my build nailed down.

Now i am just worried if this will all fit onto the case and motherboard, does anyone see any major red flags with this or anything else? or anything I could downgrade or upgrade for negligible cost(upgrade) or loss of benefits(downgrade).

As for the changes I want with a different PSU, after reading that people had issues with the RM750, and also changed the CPU cooler again, the NH-L12 should offer good cooling and be quiet at the same time.

If there are no major read flags I will start price hunting for where I can find the parts cheapest(inside switzerland, cus import costs are a bitch)

Thank you for all the help the people here provided in building my first PC

For the cooler, I'd go with the corsair hydro series h60 (liquid cooler). It is very silent and doesn't take up a lot of space. You are overpaying for the optical drive, you could cut 100$ easily =).

For the PSU, you won't need 760w unless you are planning on SLI 770 in the future. If not, a 600w PSU would be more than enough.

I do plan on sli as a future upgrade to the system and it has a 7 year warranty so I should be able to reuse it in future builds :)

The prices can be just ignored since i am looking at prices and availability in Switzerland.

The cooler you mentioned I can't find would the H80i be okay too? I am just a bit worried about using a liquid cooler since water and electronics don't mix too well 😛 , but corsair has a good track record so may as well trust them, gonna think it over for the cooler and do some more digging :)

Corsair is indeed very reliable. I don't know much about the specific model you mentioned, but it should work fine =)
