Hey TH! So i finally got all of my parts for my new computer, and i'm getting ready to build it. Now this is my first build ever so i was wondering where i should do it. I get freaked out by the horror stories of static frying their components. I was wondering if its safe to build on a laminate counter top? There would be no carpet around which i think would help. And should i purchase an anti static wrist band? They're fairly cheap and i would get one today if they're a big help! Thanks!

Counter top is okay. I do most builds on an old laminate table and now a wooden table.

Anti-static wrist straps are a bit unwieldy and unnecessary if you take precautions. All the strap does is ground you to the chassis. If you make sure the first thing that is touched when placing a component in the system is the some part of your body against the chassis (metal part/painted surface) then you achieve the same result.

Usually just elbows or wrists on some part of the chassis.

I prefer a wood tabletop, but it sounds like your sweating the small stuff. Just do it somewhere that wont cause alot of electrical build up. Make sure you ground yourself out just for safety of the components. I build several rigs a year and have yet to blow a component to static. Doesnt mean its safe, you cant always feel static electricity.
