Well Currently I need a new computer so i can play all my games and so forth i got a 2-3k and i want to build myself

So I'm looking at...

Intel Quad COre
8 gig ram DDR3
1 or 2 video cards
High Performance Motherboard
3 500 Gig Hard Drives 10000RPM *samsung*? or is there even faster?
Antec P190
2 DVD drives
no usb ports plz. *USB HUB?* Lulz
New Monitor?
And Windows Vista Home or something
what else do you think i need?

3 500 gigs? you know the 1.5 tb drive came out, look it up on newegg it's either seagate or samsung... i can't remember but you could get one of those (only like 180 bucks!) and than another 500 gig and have 2 tb! just an option though, depends on if you want raid or anything. or instead of a 500 gig you could get a velociraptor drive for max speed. you could park your'e O.S. and games there for fast boot up and load times. with a budget that huge ALOT is possible

also DO NOT get vista home, you're much better with at least premium, especially cause you will need 64 bit version for more than 3 gigs of RAM. video card wise consider the nvidia gtx 280, or maybe 2 of them lol i don't know. for a power supply if you want sli get a 1000 watt from pc power and cooling, for 1 get 1 750 watt. those things NEVER fail.

and finally 8 gigs of ram... actually if you get 64 bit vista, not a bad idea lol. go for it
 
So basically...

That 1.5TB might be SLOW that's the problem... and Get a Raid setup and what in the world is a "velociraptor"? also get premium ... is there something HIGHER then that?

and video cards I'm looking at the 9800 GTX 's ... better then GTX 280 or what?
 



velociraptor is the name of a HArd drive by Western Digital, but they are usually like 300 GB. If u want max memory then just get a 1 TB HDD r something.
And if ur spending 2-3K, then a 9800 GTX is NOTHING! definetly go with a GTX 280, maybe 2 if u have the board. and honestly, ur not very specific. U said Quad core, and that can range from $200 to $1500.
 



Ew...300 gigs? nahh I need 500 gigs. and 9800 GTX IS NOTHING? OH DEAR GOD. is the 280 THAT much better? and the BEST processor money can buy right now currently =DD

Also i just need a "quick look" about what i should have overall in my system cuz i got that much and i think i can get high performance parts for it so yeah =DD
 
The Velociraptor is where you put your OS. It's fast. You put your games or whatever on the 1Tb drive.

If you're going to spend 2K, get an ATI 4870, or Nvidia GTX280.
Or 2 of them.
That will dictate your motherboard choice (SLI or CF).

How far do you want to go with your processor. Most games are not optimized for >2 cores. But maybe in the future they will be.
So maybe an E8600 or a Q9xxx?
 
Maybe the more expensive one and they aren't ready? wtf?

Like I'm running crysis / oblivion / gears so forth ...

HDD #1 - pure speed. use for OS and games or frequently used apps that are resource hogs. OS = 10-20GB, Games = 50-100gb if you load 3+, most used apps = 20gb. High end you will have used 140gb of the 300gb available. + you have 1TB for every day stuff and another 1TB for backup. or you can use the whole 2TB for additional storage but I would lose my mind if I have over 1TB of data that was lost because I didn't back it up.

I didn't include a keyboard or mouse. Total price before mail-in-rebates and shipping = $2906. I did not use DDR3 because it is overpriced and there is little to no performance gain.
Last thing, with your budget I would wait 1-2 months and get the new i7 cpu's.
 
I think i would go with 8 gigs DDR2 but otherwise...and these i7's...

the nvidia gtx280 can't even compete with the 4870x2. and 2gb or ram on that card? that'll help ALOT with the resolution on the 24" monitor. seriously, the fact that you could spend 2k on it gives you ALOT of options to confuse urself with though.
 
i7 pros & cons of waiting

pros - next gen technology, as close to "future proof" as you can get, x58 chipset supports sli and crossfire, initial tests showed a 29% improvement over comparable current cpu's.

cons - next gen technology, driver issues etc., only supports ddr3, 2.93 ghz chip = $562 retail which means it will initially sell for $650-$700

If I were making the decision I would build a midrange ($2k or less) system with the idea that upgrades over the next 2-3 years would be for GPU and maybe memory. This is just a guess at this point but I doubt you would see any performance increases in a $3k i7 system over a $2k quad core system for at least another year. Why? ddr3 is still very expensive, the x58 chipset will definately fall into the high end ($300+) and the midrange i7 chip will sell for $600+ for the foreseeable future. Realistically you would be looking at $1500 for the cpu, MOBO and RAM.

did you read the toms hardware review of the 1.5 tb??? it got really good scores for speed. and since when has hard drive speed REALLY affected youre pc use. you should really look stuff up before you comment though, about youre velociraptor comment. its only 300 gigs because it is BLAZINGLY fast! you dont just get one you get it for youre OS and games. get a data drive for the rest.

edit: oh and just trust these guys, i can tell youre a little confused. these guys know what they are talking about. you don't need to wait for I7, its not like its gonna be instantly standard. alot of games aren't even threaded for modern quad core yet. trust me it would be fine to build a PC now
 



one thing just wondering should i get a different processor or? cuz i heard that there is a intel quad core Q9 something i forgettt but should i get the one above or the one that's so freaking expensive cuz i can wait for my NEXT paycheck lulz
 
If ur not OCing, id recommend the Q9450 Q9550 (more expensive) or even go down to a dual core which atm give better gaming performance.

There are the Extreme Editions but they are a waste if u are not Overclocking. Like a complete waste
 
If you have that much money on your hands, you can definatly get a nice system, first off #1 I would reccommed getting a 64-bit operation system (xp or vista doesn't matter), 64bit OS is much much faster then 32-bit, i have first hand expirience, as for processor, i would get a core 2 extreme or a very cheap xeon processor, since it is godly powerful. Get a 1600mhz fsb motherboard with a proccesor that supports it, 8 gig ram is good, but make sure it has speed of at least 1333mhz and get server ram since its less faulty. Hardrives, either solid state drive, or a 15,000rpm drive. Video card, I would get SLI gtx 280 or something if you still have money on your hands, if not get some cheaper cards for sli like 8800ultra or any 8800 series. Hope that helps, use your bugdet wisely and dont make an unblanced system.
 
^^ yes thats all true but @OP think seriously. Y spend $1000+ on an extreme cpu or $800 on 2 GTX 280s if in (lets say) six months, Nehalem will whoop the *** out of any Core 2 and also new gpus will come out to destroy any sli or cf setup. Save money is the best way to go imho
 
I think u should get a Good processor, like the Q9550 which should easily last a year+ especially if multithreading programs for quads come out.
Then Skip Nehalem and go straight to the next one.
IMO Nehalem is great, dont get me wrong. But atm no one needs a quad w/ 8 threads, nothing is going to use all that power and ur paying $500+ for that and then the crazy X58 mobos.

You don't need 8 gigs of RAM nor a Velociraptor. If you balance everything, you'll be alright. In my builds, you still need the OS, the keyboard, and the monitor, since I did those for myself and I have spare ones.
