I went and put together some parts which I thought would be good and would love is someone could check over them, make sure they're compatible and if you could give me some suggestions that'd be great. I'm new to the whole PC scene and honestly have no idea what I'm doing. These are the parts I quickly put together:
CPU: Intel Core i5-6500 3.2GHz Quad-Core Processor
Motherboard: Asus Z170-P ATX LGA1151 Motherboard
Memory:G.Skill Ripjaws V Series 16GB (2 x 8GB) DDR4-2400 Memory
Storage: Seagate Barracuda 2TB 3.5" 7200RPM Internal Hard Drive
Video Card:MSI GeForce GTX 960 4GB Video Card
Case (without power supply): Aerocool X-Predator Devil ATX Full Tower Case
Power Supply: EVGA 500W 80+ Bronze Certified ATX Power Supply
Optical Drive: Asus DRW-24B1ST/BLK/B/AS DVD/CD Writer
Thanks!

My budget would be $1400 AUD or lower, preferably a few hundred lower but I will be okay with spending a little extra if it really makes a difference.

Thanks, like i said i would be willing to spend a little more if necessary (as madmatt30 said it converts to 1600 aud), although if there are some parts that could be changed (price wise) and it wouldn't make a huge difference in performance, that'd be great. If they are completely necessary though thats fine and btw im planning on running games such as gta v or skyrim on med - high graphics settings.

Bang for buck build , swap the GPU out if you like but it is a very good deal considering oz prices.
