Please keep it to 1 thread.
Ok so I ordered a new pc and already shipped a few parts to me.... just asking for some advice before I get tired of it all and just order the parts like the ones I currently ordered.

mobo:ASRock B660M MicroATX Motherboard B660M-HDV Intel B660 Series CPU (LGA1700) Compatible (being shipped now)
cpu: Intel Core i5 Core 12400F Desktop Processor 18M Cache, up to 4.40 GHz (being shipped now)
memory: Silicon Power SP016GBLFU320B22 16 GB (2 x 8 GB) DDR4-3200 CL22 Memory (being shipped now)
display: Acer Nitro VG271U M3bmiipx 27" WQHD (2560 x 1440) 180 hz (being shipped now)
gpu: 1050 ti (gifted)
psu: corsair cx650 650w (gifted, not sure if green or gray)
storage: x2 1tb ssd 4th gen (gifted)

Some of the components are gifted from a friend. They had them just laying around.

Anyways let me know what you think. I want to put an rx 6800 in this rig... will it work?

Is it a good buy and worth it? just lmk what you think . Hate it or love it idc I value all of your opinions

You bought this motherboard? https://www.techspot.com/review/2424-asrock-motherboard-fail/

Your CPU will trip over the power limit every time it boosts the cores. Intel states 117w when boosting. The HDV AsRock can sustain only 65-95w, or up to 126w for 28 seconds when boosting.
So basically, you will be screwed any time your CPU does anything other than yawn and idle. Even an i3 12100 would overpower that motherboard. It's bad.

8Gb of memory is going to be low. Other than that, it's ok. Better than a 720potato. But i don't think you will get "good" 1440p gameplay. It depends on what settings you use. And whether you return the motherboard before opening the box and buy a new one. Can you afford a Gigabyte B760M DS3H DDR4? It's just about the cheapest LGA1700 motherboard that is fit for use.

The 650w Corsair is enough. RX 6800 draws 250w so if it draws double that in bursts, you'll still be ok. There's enough for the CPU and GPU.
If you feel like you're taxing the PSU too much, you can think about upgrading it, but that will be either a cheap and miserable 850w unit, or a decent but pricy 850w unit. So best not to think about it right now 😀

....the mobo and processor was an Amazon bundle.....sounds like I need to return it? Son of a...I assumed it was good enough if they bundled it with the 12400f

I bought x2 8gb of ram not one

......the board is trash omg asrock fooled me so did amazon I'm so upset right now.....at least I didn't unbox it thanks

Ya I can afford that board it's about what I payed for this one

I just have to return this junk and wait for them to reimburse me sigh...

Hey don't worry about it. Glad i caught you before you made a mistake. Same thing happened to me! 😀😀
I was about to order that board but someone on THF pointed out that a lot of people posted problem threads because of that motherboard and talked me out of it.

I wanted to buy the HDV motherboard for a dirt cheap, no frills PC and it sold for $66. Yeah... i'll have that please.
But as it turns out, it's not worth the headaches even at that price.

AsRock eventually released a new HDV line which fixed the problems. But the old rubbish is still around.

If you have 16Gb of RAM then you're ok.

Looking at PcPartPicker, the 12400f sells for $132. For $10 less you have the 12100, and it is much weaker.
The 12600kf sits at $155 but it also needs a cooler, so add $30-40 to it's price. It's not worth it in my opinion. It's unlocked and maybe more power hungry. Yeah, it's more powerfull but that leads you down the better motherboard - better PSU - better GPU - better CPU - better motherboard rabbit hole/spiral.

Ya at least you said something .. can only imagine using that mobo not knowing that...sigh

I can afford a Gigabyte B760M DS3H DDR4 thats about what i was paying for the other one.... somehow its still junk though

I have to wait 2-5 business days for amazon to refund my money now

Yeah, it's good for low power but only that. Locks you out of upgrade options.

Why not this z690 Riptide. It's a better AsRock board: https://pcpartpicker.com/product/kY...ptide-atx-lga1700-motherboard-z690-pg-riptide

It is a little bit more expensive, but it can take up to i7 14700K, though it's probably best to limit it to an i5. But those are some solid upgrade options.
It was a $285 board when new. Not a bad choice now at $125-150

I agree with a z690. I’ve got an msi z690. Mine has 4 nvme slots which is very nice for expansion. It’s only a few bucks more but should be better for putting an i7 in later on. I remember from some of the discussions that was a big factor for you.

I don't know why z690 motherboards have come down in price that much. But i won't complain. :)

It's still a flagship chipset even if it's one generation old at this point. With a BIOS update, it supports the latest 14th gen intels.
Even with a 12400f, it's probably miles better than a bunch of B760 motherboards.

ASRock B660M MicroATX Motherboard B660M-HDV Intel B660 Series CPU (LGA1700)

whats the best cpu i can put into this motherboard? can I run a i5 12400f? with an rx 6800 gpu?

Someone said that it only provides 65watts to the cpu which makes it a trash board. is this true?

Should i return this motherboard or will it work with the above components?

The concern for that board on higher end CPU would be power delivery. Not the worst VRM ever, but certainly not robust. I think pretty much any locked up to i5 that it supports would be a safe bet.

so i can use a i5-12400f? Im confused. I was told it only provides 65w to the cpu and thats not nearly enough for the i5-12400f... is this true or not?

it says it supports 14th gen on the website?

Will this work for the build I mentioned or no

What mobo/cpu/gpu combo would you recommend?

Ive ordered the monitor and ram already.. Friend gave me the case and ssd. Still need to figure out exactly which mobo/gpu/cpu/psu to buy. I think I have a pretty good idea but not exactly certain
