Building new PC SSD/HDD question

In a couple of day all my parts for a new PC should be here, I will be installing a new SSD and using an old HDD from my current PC. My question is, after I install my OS to my SSD will I be able to just plug in the HDD after and format it then, or do I have to format it before hand? I'd highly prefer the former if at all possible!
