Building PC no display no OS yet.

I'm building a new PC. The problem is I have no OS on my PC yet and I have it connected to my TV via VGA and I am getting no signal. I have a MSI Z97s krait edition and a r9 270x gpu. I have the VGA connected to the mobo not the gpu. Do I need an actual monitor until I get an OS on it? My tv is an older Vizio and I'm using a bootable thumb drive with Ubuntu on it for my OS.

go into bios and select the onboard gpu as the default display then setup the monitor when installing windows

or just connect tv to the gpu.

No, the bios doesn't even show up. My tv is saying nothing is connected to display. I see nothing

is it vga to vga or hdmi to vga cable

Uninstall your gpu completely and run motherboard video to remove that as a variable. The motherboard probably will take a few minutes to cycle through the video outs for voltage draw. Be patient, make sure the tv is on the right vga input and maybe cycle the power on the tv a few times.

I also just hooked it up to a regular PC monitor and same thing happened.

Take the gpu out of the case to use mobo outs. If you have it plugged into pci you need to use the gpu video outs.

Nice, now you can get your OS installed and get all your drivers set for the 270 to be recognized immediately.
