Built PC, switched on, no display

So I just finished building my PC for the first time. I hooked everything up, but I don't have a monitor. I have a 4K ultra HD TV, and a DVI to HDMI adapter. When I switch on the PC, the fans start working the light on the motherboard comes on, but there is no display at all on the TV.

The PS3 works just fine on the TV in the same HDMI slot, so I know it's not the TV.

I hooked up the DVI to HDMi adapter to the motherboard. Is there anything obvious I could have done wrong, or any reason why it's not displaying?

reset the cmos as have found that to work sometimes to kickstart a stubborn system. I presume both power cables from the psu is connected to the motherboard.
