If I feel like I can sneak the extra $$ past my wife, I might change the case to the CoolerMaster Storm Sniper. That's the sexiest case I've seen in a long time .. but worth $120 more? Probably not.

Thanks in advance for any advice,
CF

8 gig of RAM isnt worth the cost .

Someone published a link here a few days ago that showed 8 gig slowing game performance in more games than it helped . Sorry i didnt save the link .

That could help buying the case ....

So could buying an e8400 and overclocking it back to e8500 speeds or greater . NO problem to do this since they are the eaxact same thing anyway

I have no doubt that you are correct about 8GB RAM being overkill for games, but it should be pretty helpful with the music.

If I'm overclocking anyway .. can I get the 8500 faster than I can get the 8400?

In another forum it was strongly suggested that I get a 2nd drive to isolate the music/video from the O/S, so that might raise the price slightly.

By looking at that mobo you chose, I'm guessing you plan on running crossfire eventually. Room......that Antec from what I have read is going to be very cramped for room with crossfire. You may want to take a look at this case here. Room, and airflow...especially when running big vid cards.

On another note, seeing how you plan on overclocking .... +1 to the poster who mentioned the E8400. Price and performance.

The price difference between the E8400 and E8500 seems so small :(

I was definitely thinking that if I increase my resolution at some point that I'd want to crossfire. I didn't realize that the Three Hundred was so tight to work in. Making me think pretty seriously about that CoolerMaster Storm Sniper!

You may want to look at that motherboard again. Because i noticed it only had PCI x8 slots as apposed to x16 which i would reccomend especialy if you are planning on doing SLI or crossfire down the road.i would take a look at the Nvidia 750 i SlI motherboard.
here is a link to that.

I wouldn't recommend a DFI board unless you're a hardcore OCer.

Could get the HD4850x2 for about the same price as the 4870.

My guess is Nvidea charges a few more dollars for their cards for the fact they take that extra money and make drivers that actually work. :p Of course I could be wrong.......

I was originally going to get the 4850x2 and was steered away from it. I was told that because of limited vendor support I might have issues getting drivers in the future, and therefore it was better to get 1 4870 and if I want to go higher res in the future just xfire in a 2nd one.

Unless your going for a mild overclock, more than likely that ram is going to hold back your cpu when you go to overclock it. You might want to take a look at the Gskill Black or some mushkin. Both have great ram (latency 4) with good timings and low voltage. Which means you can crank it up along with your cpu.

It's the same drivers whether you go with an x2 card or 2 cards in Crossfire. And the driver support will not end if the card is no longer being made; my old 9500Pro is still supported.

I've never had issues with either company's drivers.

this is from my original thread on this system:

It was based on that post that I changed to the 4870 1GB

I would change your CPU cooler here is somthing someone else said about the one you are planning to get.
44C is horrible that is like the stock heat sink. look into the "sunbeam core contact freezer" its only $30 and it cools as good as a $70 heatsink. look it up.

"i currently have the title cpu heatsink (XIGMATEK HDT-S1283 120mm Rifle CPU Cooler) in my build right now and im getting really hot core temps. I run the e8500 and am getting an load temp of usually around 44C i dont have it OC'ed at all."

The Sunbeam is also a good cooler, but 44C at load is not hot (and also meaningless without knowing ambient).

LOL .. that's one funky looking case!

I think that might be a little extreme looking for me. I kinda like the sniper because there's no window and with the lights out to most people it would look kinda plain.

Looking at the core contact now

Not to jack this thread...but when I was looking at those two cases you guys posted...the Cooler Master and the NZXT I came across a case just now...a Gigagbyte...and I think I'm going to order it when I get my tax refund. So this means this thread just cost me over a $130 :(...but on a good note...there's something about this Gigabtye case I like...it's like totally unigue looking.
