burning smell coming from back of PC

If i go to the back of my PC while it is on it has a very faint and weak burnt smell to it.

A couple months ago i installed a new motherboard and I7 4790k with a Cryorig H7 on it.

What should I do? i was thinking about trying a can of air and blowing out dust.

I normally leave it on while im gone and it runs a couple of programs that keep it from sleeping and its running for about 4 hours while im at school.

my CPU Temps normally are around the 30's -40's when I get home and GPU temps were around 50 GTX 760 2gb (reference card)

How close are you to the PC? Is your nose right up to it? Is it the PSU exhaust grill or a different exhaust?

My PC is on my desk next to my monitor and speakers so yes i a, very close to it.

I thought i smelt a very faint burning smell so I followed the smell to the back of my PC where it is the strongest.

Is it a new PC? I've smelt a sort of metallic smell before from the back of my PCs. Is it metallic or campfire?

camp fire burning smell. No it is not new, but I have replaced the video card, motherboard, CPU and CPU cooler in it.

GTX 760 was installed last year January with my fx 4130

then i replaced the fx 4130 with an i7 4790k and MSI z97 PC mate motherboard and cryorig H7 cooler.

What is the brand and model of your PSU? I mean if it was really on fire you would have found out by now, so its possible there is something in there thats burning, or something in the psu (a label or something) that is burning a bit.

Its a low quality PSU i got when i got my gtx 760,

Thermaltake TR2 600 watt

I was planning on upgrading when I got a gtx 1070 then planned to overclock my 4790k

can you narrow down where its coming from? I would say its probably the PSU thats doing it.

it has to be on for a little while then it starts to smoke and I am currently not home. I should be home in about 50 minutes i will test it and get back to oyu then, Thanks 😀

It's likely your PSU failing, but also check all your cables and make sure nothing is loose, especially if you're using a fan controller. The wrong voltages going through can make wires burn.

i do not see actual smoke, I let my computer run for about 6 hours yesterday and it didn't smell at all. It did smell for two days in a row though.

If its running right, nothing is on fire/smoking and the smell is gone you're probably ok. It could have been some dust or something burning off, maybe some pet hair got in there or something.

hopefully, i often leave it on at home under a partial load for like 4 hours, dont want to come home and see my house is burnt down and my cat that is locked in my room die.

ive been thinking about it, when i left my PC on to test if it would smell it didnt smell.

But i also had the monitor turned off, I have my PC on my desk next to my monitor

Could it be the monitor? it is pretty old its 1440x900 and its at least 5-10 years old lol

A monitor absolutely could do that either from its circuitry going bad or dirt/hair/dust burning inside. its not likely but its possible.
