Burning smell while rendering?

Hey all -

Recently built a rig with an AMD FX-8350 and a GTX660. All has been great with no issues for months. Core Temp would read about 60C max when under heavy load.

I'm a 3D artist so I was rendering a pretty heavy scene in Maya. I let it render for about 20 minutes and came back to check and noticed it was running about 85C and I noticed a burning smell. I cancelled the render and shut the computer down.

I'm going to let it sit overnigt and get some advice here before I do anything. Did I do any major harm to my comp? What would be the burning smell? How can I tell if I've done harm?

Now to fix the issue - I'll try a fresh layer of paste tomorrow. But is there anything else I can try? I only have one rear exhaust fan but now I plan on picking another up.

Anyway, any insight into what might have caused this would be awesome. Haven't noticed any computer issues lately at all so this is outta nowhere.

Thanks

Did you check that all the fans were turning? If one of them was broken, or stuck for a while, it would cause overheating like that. In particular check that the fan in the PSU is free and turning - burning smells often originate there.

I'm not sure about your particular processor, but 85 isn't outrageously high in general so I would doubt that you had done any damage to it. But if the sell came from elsewhere it's difficult to tell for sure; as long as it keeps working don't worry about it.
