The motherboards with bells and whistles costs arms and legs. I was thinking of getting a basic z590 board and adding wifi and thunderbolt ports using the PCIe slots. Would this be better to have all the necessary ports built into the motherboard? Main benefit I see to buy components as I needed.

Newegg has Asrock micro atx for $118 - https://www.newegg.com/p/N82E168131...e=z590m-_-13-157-991-_-Product&quicklink=true. I can then get a PCIe wifi card for $20 and thunderbolt 4 when needed.

Other option I am considering is the MSI Z590 Pro Wifi Pro series from amazon for $191.11 - https://www.amazon.com/MSI-ProSerie...ld=1&keywords=msi+z590m&qid=1629866519&sr=8-4

There are more expensive boards of course with more features built-in.

Plan to run i7 11700k, Nvidia 3070, M.2 drive and couple of hdd/ssd.

Solution
im not a fan of Asrock Budget Z series motherboard, if you're not planning on overclocking, better go off with 11700F and B560M Steel Legend. Grab a good MSi MAG or MPG Z series for that kind of cpu (better vrm cooling is a good thing).
