Buy an i3-3220 or save up for an i5-3570

I was wondering if it's be worth saving up for an i5 3570 just for the extra cores or just cheap it for hyper threading since I feel I'd benefit greatly from it being on a Celeron G530 at the moment.

Edit: I'd also like to add that I'm only looking to upgrade since I'm looking to buy an EVGA GTX 750 ti (sc) and don't want any form of bottleneck when playing modern games

Solution
Xeons are/always have been i5/i7 CPU's with the igp removed & locked clocks - they perform exactly the same as an equivalent model i5/i7 at comparable clock speeds.

Looking around there are a lot of i5 2400's on bin prices of £60-70 from reasonably trusted sellers.
I might be inclined to go for a 2400 locked i5 over a k series as any 2500k on there has a good chance of being abused by overclockers in its working lifetime.

The i5 4690 is cheaper than the 3570 but it's the wrong socket, I'm currently running LGA 1155 and have about £100 at this moment to spend on a cpu upgrade, I figure it would be better just to save but it's an extra £80 for the i5 where the i3 is around the £90 mark

If you are using it for gaming, i3 or i5, any of them will do. But if you plan to future proof your rig a little bit, i5 will be better option. More cores compared to i3 and better performance. Minimum requirement for future games and most of the newer titles are 4 Cores. So i5 would be better.

Any haswell cpu will run rings around your G530.
The G3258 at stock 3.2 is about 2x stronger
With a simple overclock you will get 4.0-4.4.
Most games depend on a single fast master thread.
Few can use more than 4 cores.
If on a budget, G3258 or i3 of some sort is good. If you have the budget, i5 is better,

The main caveat with a true dual core is that a few games require 4 threads. For that, a I3 will do. I would not buy an obsolete lga1155 cpu unless you are buying used at a very good price.
I3-4170 will run any game very well with an appropriate graphics card.

Hello... The Xeon E3 v2 family are socket 1155 CPU's... E3-1220 v2 is a i5 and can be found Used and low cost from time to time on EBAY, they are pulls from workstations. http://www.ebay.com/itm/SR0PH-Intel-Xeon-Quad-Core-E3-1220-v2-3-1GHz-Cache-8M-Socket-LGA1155-OEM-CPU-/141726399777?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item20ff8d3d21

E3 1230 v2 is an i7 http://www.ebay.com/itm/INTEL-XEON-E3-1230-V2-Core-3-3Ghz-8MB-cache-SR0P4-/141734800042?hash=item21000d6aaa

I would have to agree the Used i5 2500 or i5 2500K might be a 1155 Price vs Performance good buy for you... http://www.cpubenchmark.net/cpu.php?cpu=Intel+Core+i5-2500+%40+3.30GHz
They did run a little hotter and were subjects for Overclocking... the Xeons were not Overclockable but were Servers/Workstations used 24/7

Xeons aren't ideal for gaming however are they? I'm no expert on cpu's however so I'm just curious

I do like the sound of this but I don't always like the idea that since it's used it won't last for long.

Hello... Very same internal/external construction... for the models I suggested... I have quite a few e3 1240 v2 builds in the field... it is the same CPU as a i7 3770... the e3 1240 v3 is .1 ghz less than an i7 4770... it's the secret little $$$ saver out there for 1155 upgrades/builds. http://www.cpubenchmark.net/cpu_lookup.php?cpu=Intel+Xeon+E3-1240+V2+@+3.40GHz
But!!! There will be no on CPU IGT/GPU... on most models... AND they will not be a "K" model - overclockable.

^ yeah mate - buy it is my advice ;-)
I'm tempted myself as currently have an old 1155 spare rig with a 2320 installed - to be fair it performs well enough as is but £65 ain't a lot of money.

With what you've saved mate I would suggest a cheap but good aftermarket cooler aswell.

Thank you very much for all your help mate, I guess the title of this thread doesn't make much sense now tho haha

Don't matter mate really - as long as the outcome is good - at 65 quid you cant really go wrong - you could pair a 960 or a 280x with a 2400 & it would still do a good job.

You'll need a cooler though ,your celeron one will only be rated to 65w.

Best 3 (all will do a grand job) under £20

Hello... The i5 2400 is a 95 watt CPU... You could try it and see if it can keep DOWN your CPU temps while gaming... you need to run a test, and watch and see... Stock intel i5/i7 1155 push-pin OEM's would be another Low cost option...
Check your local computer shop or Computer re-cycling store... they will have a box full of them somewhere... and could be had at a giveway price.

is this 55c idle or under load? Also my case is 18cm wide so need to take that into consideration when looking for cpu fans
