Hello am in the mid of building my new workstation (VM&emulation) the only constraints is ddr3 ( already have 16 gig). I've being doing some research and up until now the i7-4790k shows up at the top but since I don't attend to overclock I've decided to go i7-4790. What do you think? I wanna keep this machine for at least 5 years. Should I buy now or should I wait, also should I go with a six core or ditch the ddr3 that I have and go with ddr4. Will the socket 1150 be around for a little more or should I go with something else

Sockets aren't lasting as long as they used to, though the enthusiast sockets last a bit longer just because they're upgraded less frequently (2011v3/x99). If you're doing a lot of vm/emulation the extra physical cores of a 5820k could help. The reason for a 4790k over the 4790, it's clocked faster out of the box by 400mhz without even overclocking it. It might be awhile before skylake has a replacement for the x99 since they update those at a slower pace, typically after the mainstream boards and chipsets have been updated. Socket 1155 was replaced with 1150 and now 1151 is being debuted already for skylake which is around the corner. Skylake will be ddr4 as well but like haswell will be 4c/4t or 4c/8t like current i5's and i7's.
