Buy another gtx 980 sc, sell gtx 980 and buy 980 ti, or just overclock my card.

In May when i got my GPU i had no idea there was a 980ti right around the corner the first 3 months after i bought the 980 i had not plan on gaming on a 1440p display later on. When the 980ti came out i was driven away by the heat issues and some of the reviews about the card. This made me miss the 3 month windows for the step-up program. Now that i upgraded my display to a PB78Q( a 1440p @60hz display), i found in some games such as the witcher 3 i am having trouble keeping 60 fps and want better performance. Now I starting to regret not using the step-up opportunity when i had the chance. Should i first look into overclocking my card to see if i can get better performance? I have never overclocked anything because i was scared that i will damage my hardware. Should I instead look if i can buy a second 980 to equal the performance of a 980ti at 1440p? I do not plan on going over 1440p, so will i need the VRAM from the ti? Or should i sell my 980 and get a 980ti?

My current system:
1x EVGA GTX 980 SC 4GB
i7-4790k 4.4 ghz
ASUS Z97-A motherboard
CM Trooper Case
1x 120 GB Samsung EVO SSD
1x 500 GB crucial SSD
1 TB Western Digital HDD Black Edition
16 GB of Corsair Vengeance Ram 2132 ghz
EVGA supernove 750w psu

Almost the same situation here. Except Im running 5760x1200 on 3 27" monitors. I bought a second GTX 980 and ran SLI. Despite allot people complaining about SLI issues and microstutter, I have seen zero problems in any of my 60+ games. Getting excellent performance with max setting (moderate AA settings on some games depending) And couldnt be happier. Was on the fence about waiting for Pascal, but I decided to deal with that when they come out.

The 980 really lost it's "reason for being" being bracketed by the 970 and 980 Ti

From a bang for ya buck standpoint, SLI always beats buying the next biggest card

So two 970s is 6% faster than the Titan X, the 980s are 15% faster than than the 970s and the Titan C is 4% faster than the 980 Ti ... that makes the twin 980s about 27% faster than a single 980 Ti. You will into the occasional game that doesn't have a profile (IIRC there's 1 in TPUs game test suite) but generally you get 100+ fps in those games with a single card.

My son plays on a IPS 1440p (XB270HU Predator) w/ twin 970s and IIRC, he gets about 80 fps in Witcher 3 . Last we talked, he was considering turning G-Sync off and instead using ULMB @ 85 Hz..

I find in most cases these *problems* are being repeated from older posts, not from actual experience. I have not seen an SLI issue since before the 5xx series. My youngest has twin 560 Tis in SLI w/ 28% OC on air and he's not found reason to upgrade at 1080p. I expect when he graduates college, he will get a nice $3k build for himself just as the other 2 did.

Ok I will look into getting another 980 when I can. Do you recommend that I get the same card, the 980 super clocked acx 2.0? I was thinking about getting a cheaper 980 or does brand matter when using sli?. The only reason i did not get dual 970s was the fact that it only had 3.5 gbs of fast fast ram and .5 gbs of slower ram. I wanted to have all 4gb so i bought 980. Also is my power supply sufficient for both 980s?

I have 2 EVGA SC cards, the reference style and an ACX 2.0. The ACX heatsink cools much better. 15-25C difference in gaming. I ended up ordering the EVGA hybrid cooler for the reference SC card. If you have decent airflow in your case I would go with another ACX 2.0 SC. But any brand will work as long as its a 980.
