So I decided to sell my old GPU as it couldn't drive my 1440p (60hz) display smoothly on higher settings. I was thinking about upgrading to GTX 980 or get a 970 and eventually go SLI, but I've heard that the big card might come out soon, I don't have a GPU at the moment, do you think it's worth the wait for 980ti?

Solution
don't go to 970 SLI, there a problem about VRAM allocation .... (it's been an uproar right now)
u will better off with 980...

Haven't heard about 980ti, but I also opt to wait, for couple of reason..
- beside that 970 "memory" things need to be clarify..
- AMD "scheduled" release new 3xx series card in march.. (it may drive the price down)

Solution
Big Maxwell = new Titan which will sell to all the high end users first then when AMD can get close to the performance for a lot less money NVidia will release a cut down new Titan ala 780 back in the day for the original Titan this all means you'll have to wait. If your budget it looking good I'd hold out for EVGAs hybrid cooling 980 or consider the top air cooled GPUs like HOF, CLASSIFIED or POSEIDON.
