So I found a late 2007 model 27'' IMac for 75 bucks at a thrift shop, it booted up and I took it home. After hooking it up to peripherals I found that it had an empty 500GB HDD and a leopard upgrade disc in the DVD-RW. So I did research and found that if you can borrow someones Mac you can download Mavericks, transfer it to a thumb drive, and install it on the Mac. Another option is to simply go with Linux and be done with it. Haven't had any experience of either of these OS's besides borrowing an Ipad occasionally. So should I just go and install Linux or go through the trouble of installing maverick.

Solution
I'd go with Mavericks. It's easy to install — easier than Linux. Installing from a USB drive is the way to go. Grab the UniBeast app.
