[SOLVED] Buy Threadripper 3960x now or wait for 4000 series?

I need to do a new build for work sometime before the end of the year. The 3960x fits what I'm doing really well. Thing is do I wait for the next gen of Threadrippers? I just can't decide!

There seem to be fairly large improvements in these CPUs every year ...
Surely the price of a 3960x will drop when the next gen comes out......
The next gen surely will be more powerful...
Will the next gen of threadrippers still be sTRX4? If so I could go for 3960x now and drop in a new threadripper later...

Please help!

I'd wait and see what changes and/or revisions are made when the Threadripper 4000 series is launched. Often times there's mention that socket compatibility will remain the same but they are quickly shot down when you look at power requirements and VRM designs of motherboard o cater to more cores and higher power draw.

I've not even heard of any rumors of rumors of upcoming TRX4 CPUs....so would be surprised to see any this calendar year, frankly...

me neither. However, the top of the range new Ryzen desktop (4950x ?) may end up close in performance to the current 3960x

Ryzen desktop CPUs will always have less memory bandwidth than TR or EPYC. If dual channel memory is acceptable, then a desktop Ryzen is OK.
