Buying a 1440p before upgrade a good idea?

Ive decided to buy a completely new setup, monitor included, seeing as my current one isn't up to the standards i have (which might be a bit to high mind you), and after a lot of research and forum scrolling, most people tell me to buy the monitor first, and see if i really want to upgrade my PC to something that can handle a 1080 or 1080ti without bottlenecking. Seeing as i have a 1920x1080p 60hz monitor right now, and im looking at a 1440p 144Hz monitor, would my pc be able to work well with it? Or should i get the monitor the same time as the new pc?

Overclocked GTX 1060 GB founders edition
i5-4570
14 gigs ram
B85M-E MoBo
Case fan cooling aswell as CPU Fan

I reckon your PC can handle that resolution. If you want to get the monitor now, I would say go for it. No harm in it, even if game performance deteriorates you can game at 1080p whilst enjoying other content in 1440p.

That'll be fine to get the monitor first, you'll need to lower the settings a bit but Gsync should help immensely with stuttering or screen tearing.

You could go either way. A 1060 isn't going to let you do high/Ultra 1440p in most titles, but it's not like it's totally beyond it's means.

Medium(ish) settings, maybe low in some titles should let you hit the necessary framerate for GSync to help out.

So theres a minimum FPS before g sync actually kicks in?

Yes, I believe so..... Although struggling to verify this.

I thought it was 30Hz as the lower end, but seeing mixed results..... maybe there isn't one for GSync & I'm thinking FreeSync instead.

I think it's 30hz to whatever the maximum is of the monitor. Freesync is 40 or 50hz.

Ive also seen some people saying that Display port is almost needed to feel the difference, especially in Hz. I honestly have no clue what the difference is and which one i have, is there a specific way to tell the difference and what if i dont have a port for it?

It may be, I'd just use it in 1440P and for games just lower the settings to around med.
