Hello,

I'm looking to purchase a new laptop for around 500 bucks...I'm looking for something that'll play modern games. I found one for 479 with the following specs

AMD Phenom II Quad-Core Processor N970 2.20GHz
6GB DDR3 Memory
500GB 5400 RPM Hard Drive
ATI Radeon HD 4250 graphics

Would it run modern games?

Also, if you know a better one, for a relatively low price...please link me :) Its just a rough budget

Solution

I own a very similar laptop to that. You aren't going to get great performance in gaming. It is better than the one you initially linked to though. It's okay for light gaming at a lower resolution. Expect low settings at 720p if you want playable performance. Some really demanding games like Crysis 2, Witcher 2 or Metro 2033 probably won't be playable at all, as the Radeon HD 6520g falls below those game's minimum specs. The games will run, but your framerates will likely not exceed 20FPS.

I'm looking for something that would maybe run Dead Island...even on a really low quality setting. I don't know much about computers so can someone refer me to good specs?

If you want a laptop that can play modern games like BF3 you're going to have to spend a LOT more than 500$. My friend has a 1500$ gaming laptop and to get playable FPS he has to turn the graphics to a little over medium. If you spent that much on building a desktop you could max out BF3.

If you are set on getting a laptop get one with at least a 570M or 670M (Radeon Equivalent HD 5870 and 6800M), and you will be able to play any game that comes your way at acceptable settings. Above all I would highly recommend building a desktop if you want to play modern games because it will cost less and preform better.

Hope this helps,

Getting a laptop because I'm on the road a lot. I ended up ordering a HP g7-1365dx - I hope it gets the job done :)

After a trip to Google and TomsHardWare's GPU hierarchy chart, I'd say you will be pleased with that laptop.

It would say it will give you adequate gaming performance. While the integrated Radeon HD 6520G isn't that great, at least it's better than the Intel HD 3000 graphic found in Intel's Sandy Bridge CPUs.

I think you need to drop the resolution down to 1366x768 to get good enough gaming performance... depending on what games you plan to play.

Just got the laptop in the mail today...I'm quite happy to say that its running Dead Island flawlessly on maxed out settings, and I should be able to pull of Battlefield 3 on medium quality. :) Thanks for talking me out of the first one I linked to! Haha
